Possible photoshoot in NYC coming up, and I'm looking at accommodation close to the studio I'm looking to hire on 443 W 18th Street. This is one under consideration - price looks good (client's pennies) and seems to be a new one? Anyone stayed here or somewhere nearby? (Link is for the studio location).

Would like to get some points for the effort (if possible) so the other brands I'm also considering are IHG, Starwood, and Accor. Naturally if there's a gem in the area (that includes breakfast) I'll happily forgo the points for the atmosphere.

Have stayed in a great hotel the last time I was in NY, but as you had to queue for breakfast at the diner downstairs, I'm not considering it for the period of the shoot; great for a holiday but *not* for business, when time is money - they were always packed and you had to wait, but it was worth it!

TIA

Your map link is a bit of a hike to the subway. But the Chelsea Market is good for food. I don't know about the Hilton though sorry.

Have stayed at HGI Times Square, DoubleTree Times Square South and Hilton Manhattan East. I preferred them in that order but I plan to stay in Hilton Fashion District next time I am there. Seems to be good value. If you stay report back!

I've stayed at the Hilton Fashion District 4 or 5 times and really like it. The rooms are compact but relatively modern, easy access to Penn Station to Airlink / JFK, Macy's, Fifth Avenue, Madison Square Park etc. Lots of rooms have great views of the Empire State. Breakfast used to be fantastic, now it's just so so although I've read on FT that Diamonds can still ask for the old breakfast vouchers on check in.

Have stayed there. It was fine, but nothing too special. It is a classic (what I call) "cookie cutter" hotel, that is typical of most chain hotels built in NYC in the last ten or so years. It could be a Hilton GI, Doubletree, FourPoints, Holiday Inn, Sheraton or I am sure any one of another brands. As well as that hotel, I've stayed in Hilton GI Chelsea, Hilton GI W 35th St, Doubletree Chelsea, 4 Pts Chelsea, 4 Pts SoHo and Sheraton Brooklyn. To me the different hotels were barely distinguishable, very similar to each other. It may of course depend on room type, but if in standard room they seem pretty standard across the chains.

Not too concerned about the subway access, having photo gear we'll be taking a cab to the studio, and once the shoot's over, I can do with the fresh air, so a walk to 28th St Subway will be a nice change to being stuck inside.

The term "cookie cutter" describes it well (having shot many Hilton hotels in Asia and the EU over the years it is very apt!) - don't need all the bells and whistles (though they are nice), as long as it offers a decent room and breakfast, it will be fine.

Thanks guys - as always, a fountain of knowledge here on AFF!!

Oh I'm being much more New York specific in calling it "cookie cutter", and more than just room decor. There's a range of hotels in several chains that are built to almost identical designs over the last 10 years, in terms of room size, room layout, elevator layout, right down to the building setback from main street. Zooming in on Google Earth or Satellite view shows these clearly, can easily be picked - although looking at that the Hilton FD seems wider, so may have bigger rooms! Generally the main variation seems to be the chain-specific decor in the rooms and layout of the lobby.

Hmm... what's changed on the breakfast front? Stayed there in November last year as a Gold and still got the vouchers on check-in...

Just a quick updae on this. I stayed again a couple of weeks ago and asked about the option of the old Diamond breakfast. I didn't get a clear answered but was offered 2 $12.50 voucers for Sunac Fine Foods on 6th Ave which can be used for anything in the store (including alcohol). It's a great option because I was travelling by myself and and also stayed on a Sunday night when NYC hotels are very cheap ($87 plus tax for me that night).
