Hi

I have read a number of post in this website re early in town check in at Kowloon

From what I have gathered is that I could check in early in the morning eg 10am at Kowloon MRT Airport station and then spend some time shopping before catching the airport MRT to the airport in the early evening

My questions are

  1. from reading other posts i need to buy a MRT airport train ticket to enter the check in area so to check in my luggage etc. After check in can I NOT board the airport train but exit the station instead to go into the city for shopping. Would I be able to use this same MRT ticket to re enter the station later that day to catch the train to the airport or would the entry gate to the station disallow me as it assumed I have used the ticket when I used it to gain access to the station to do early check in?
  2. after early check in could I rebaord the free MRT connecting bus back into the city?
  3. is the free connecting bus soley for airport passengers and can take suitcases

thanks

I can answer point 1, you can leave the area once you've checked in.

I sure the AFF gurus will answer the other questions in good time.

Used it many times from Central and I doubt Kowloon would be any different.

You need your ticket (Octopus) to enter the ITCI area.

Once checked in, you simply exit and do whatever you wish until it's time to take the airport express to HKG.

You need to use the same ticket as you did when checking in to take the train.

I recently went through this at the Central check-in area. I assume its the same at Kowloon.

1) Yes, you buy an Airport Express train ticket to enter the check-in area. To check in, you put the ticket in the barrier and enter the check in area. After checking-in you EXIT the area through the barrier. Now you can either catch the lift to the train level, OR do whatever you like in Hong Kong, before returning later and taking the lift at the same place down to the train departure area.

2) If you are talking about the Airport Express free Hotel bus from a hotel to the Kowloon check-in: If you don't have luggage, the driver will ask to see your plane ticket. If you can't show that you have a flight that day, he won't accept you. We tried to get the bus to go to the station to catch a train to meet a friend who was arriving at the airport that day. With no luggage and no ticket - we got bounced.

3) Yes, the bus is designed to take passengers and their luggage to the Kowloon or Central check in stations. If there is a non passenger, as long as it looks like they are one of the flying pax, (ie luggage to spread around), a non flying person should be OK.

When we did get the bus to go to the station for our flight out of HKG, it was almost full and luggage was stacked up in the aisle!

Thanks Rooflyer,Sefty,Yohy and Hvr

Am I correct to say that after I check in my baggage etc I use the ticket to exit the check in area to go into town etc....and in such case I would not insert my ticket to gain access to the platform for the train.
When I return to the stationthat evening to go to the airport I need to insert that same ticket to gain access to the MRT train platform. It would allow me to enter the platform as I did not use such ticket to access the platform in the morning?

You use your ticket to enter the ITCI area; after checking in, you simply exit via one-way barrier gates.

After that you use your ticket as you normally would.

I normally check in at Kowloon - and can confirm that it is the same as per the Central.

Basically just a normal check in error with barriers - swipe you express ticket (or octopus card) to enter - do your business and leave. Can then go downstairs to the platform where you pass through the proper barrier or stay upstairs in the shopping mall. If you have the time it's also a fairly straight forward walk to the main kowloon shopping areas. Also plenty of shops at Elements Mall if you don't want to travel to far.

Civic Square above Elements is nice for a cold one if the weather is good

As someone who uses the Kowloon checkin and used it again only a month or so ago, you can only access the checkin area once you have purchased your MRT ticket, however once you have checked in you exit back out into the public part of the station. There is nothing preventing you from leaving the station and going where ever you like. (Can't speak about the bus, I've never taken it)

We call it the MTR here in HK ;)

(MRT is in that other major Asian city that shall not be named ;))

Very true, didn't even notice the typo as I was typing... My excuse is I visited both cities in the same day, thus the need to use the Kowloon check in on my last visit...
