We are flying out of HKG tomorrow night and are considering using the in-town check-in to avoid lugging our baggage around all day (and allowing us to get to The Wing a tad earlier than usual... ;)).

I've had a look on this site, and on FT, and while I can find answers to most of my questions about in-town check-in I can't find out whether this will cause any problems with our upgrade request from J to F (though looking at Seatcounter I think it is unlikely anyway).

As the upgrade request won't clear until at least 5 hours before departure, and we would be checking in about 12 hours before departure, I assume we would receive J boarding passes. So does that then cancel our upgrade request or could we still get handed F boarding passes at the airport?

Sorry Homer, don't know the answer, but same (i think) question: what happens when i check in with cathay for a flight into HK to connect onto a Qantas flight to Australia? Check in before the 5hr limit - how does Qantas deal with the upgrade request?
Cheers.

Upgrade requests can come through at various times, so if approved it could come through before the 12 hour mark when you want to check in.

I have a feeling that I have been in this situation before in Hong Kong a few years ago. I can recall checking in at the train station with Qantas, and having my bags checked through, but no boarding pass issued. I suspect this was the time I did a Y->J upgrade on the sector. I think it was because my itinerary had a waitlisted sector (the upgrade).

But I'm pretty hazy about it now, and hope others have more current experience.

I am not sure this is accurate, but I asked the hotel concierge to chase this up for me and she has spent the last two hours on it. She just called to say that the answer she got from QF was that once I use in-town check-in and a J boarding pass is issued, my upgrade request will be automatically cancelled. Therefore it looks like I am not using in-town check-in unless, as has been noted, the upgrade clears 12 hours ahead of time.

I/we have checked in in Central and done Disney for the day and then all been given an Op ups at boarding. Slightly different situation but may be of some use to you.

With a Y to J upgrade ex HKG, I was already aware the upgrade had come through using www.qantas.com/yourbooking and www.checkmytrip.com . The point had been deducted ~14 hours before the QF128 flight.

On checking-in in Central, I was handed my J BP ...

Thanks to all for your replies. I just checked online (12 hours before the flight) and the upgrades have come through (points have been deducted, upgrade is showing as confirmed in the booking). So I will go ahead and do an in-town check-in because that should in theory be perfectly safe now.

Congratulations Homer. The best outcome all round :!:
