I am interested in the difference (if any) between the Wing and Pier lounges in HKG?

Many thanks

Location:

Pier - underground/covered in with limited decent views - nice cooling AC though
Wing - wide open spaces and views over the terminal and tarmac but does tend to get hot I find

Restaurant (F lounge)

Pier - nice food but doesnt have the same ambience as the Wing

Showers

Pier - decent showers but the Wing has the cabanas which have baths, showers and daybeds

Bars (J lounge)

Pier has the long bar but the Wing has the VERY long bar...

simongr summed it up nicely.

My vote goes for the Wing (i.e. the lounge closest to immigration). Even if you can't access the F Lounge part of Wing, the views and ambience make it much more superior to the Pier.

Was just reading this as I left the Wing for the Pier, and didn't have time to respond - am now in the ICN CX lounge, which has a bit more of a Pier feel to it.

If we're talking about First lounges, I actually preferred the dining room of the Pier, and the Pier in general has more of a first class feel to it (fittings, condition of furniture etc). Of course, the Wing has the open air ambience about it (and the cabanas) which, as mentioned earlier, does give it an edge from a certain point of view. It's a pain to get from one to the other though, especially if you (as we have today) have to get to gates in the 40s and 50s.

In general (including the J lounges), I found the Pier to be much busier in the early morning (ironically you'd think) but the views of the aircraft up close and taking off were much more spectacular (as opposed to the occasionally glimpse at one or two from the Wing).

Has been a heavy CX day for us, returning on the same metal that brought us into ICN and based on some hints from the purser, fingers crossed for an op up (one can hope at least!). TR to follow. :)

The Wing's cabañas are fantastic: huge bathrooms with deckchairs, water features and a back-lit glass wall that feels like a large window (it's opaque, so any window feel is illusory). If you have an hour to kill and want to have a nice shower, the Wing is the place to go.

You can always try both, by the way. They'll let you into the Wing and the Pier on the same visit if your status is high enough.

It appears the OP is a WP so yes access is possible to the cabanas.

Oddly enough, I have no idea how popular (!) they are, because I arrived at the CX Wing at around 1000-1100 on a Monday morning, and had absolutely no trouble getting a free one.

It's a nice personal space - and if you feel like surfing the 'net whilst inside a cabana, you should be able to (IIRC the signal just makes it) and there is a power point underneath the bench next to the lounge chair.

Probably my only gripe is that the "bed" and the deck chair are both hard leather. I'm not sure how hard people like their beds, but for me that was a bit too hard and not much better than sleeping on a hard floor. Laying down a towel and the bathrobe helps a bit.

Note that there is a little "river" at the back of the cabana. Two things: first, this river connects all of the cabanas, so whilst you are most advised not to wade in the river to peek into the other cabanas, do note that any sound you make in your cabana will carry through. (So no singing, laughing your a** off, etc.). Additionally, the lounge chair is precariously close to the edge of the cabana. If you don't watch your step, you just might trip into the "river" - the water won't kill you, but the shallowness, the rocks below and the opaque wall just might.

This info and a bit more coming to a TR near you and hopefully soon.

From my experience the locals like rock hard beds and assume that everyone else does also.

Having only transited HKG and noting the time it takes to get from one end of the terminal to the other, I've just gone for the closest lounge to the gate!

Agree, WIng has the ambiance and faciities. the resturant on occassions has been superb. I have going there since it opened, never tire of the place.

cheers SPRUCE:o:o

Well, having popped into the Wing today to find the First class section absolutely brimming at the seams and a long queue for dining, I can understand NM's earlier comments about the viability of the QP/QF Flounge opposite G15 as an alternative to the Wing if boarding at a low numbered gate.

TR and pics to follow. :)

I should be fair and say that when I waltzed into the Wing F dining area, there were about half a dozen free tables, and I was very warmly welcomed into one (with drink order then promptly taken and delivered).

As I was eating - and I probably spent well over 45 minutes there (working and eating) - eventually all of the tables filled up, and there was a constant back log of about 1-2 tables. However, when I left, there was no more back log.

In this case, QF/BA probably would make a nice alternative. If you want to eat, though, I'd try the Pier (but it will take at least 10-15 minutes to get there from the Wing, even if you are lucky to get the APM on time). My main gripe with the QF/BA lounge is the food (except during dinner) - hope the F lounge part would have better food, but until they put in their plans of beefing (no pun intended) it up so it's as good as the SYD/MEL F Lounge, I'm not holding my breath on that. (To give some perspective, I've been in the SIN QF/BA F Lounge and the AKL QF F Lounge. In both cases, the F Lounge food has not been entirely exciting.)

What would be interesting is if they do fix up the HKG QF/BA F Lounge section to be like the SYD/MEL F Lounges, then still bear the branding that this is a jointly operated QF/BA lounge (maybe it should be the "BA HKG Business Class Lounge" and the "QF HKG First Class Lounge" ;) :D).

There is not a huge difference between the Wing and the Pier unless you are looking for something specific. Also take note that the new QF/BA lounges are rather nice as well.

Personally I would go to the lounge closest to my gate....

I tend to prefer the Pier as a pre-departure point as it is nice and cool. The Wing is nice for a post arrival stop as the Cabanas are a great freshen up area.
