HLO but with unused checked allowance. What happens if HL needs to be gate checked?

Does anyone know what happens?

If you are on a fare that includes a checked allowance but you prefer to travel Hand Luggage Only, what happens if JQ insists your HL (or part of it) needs to be checked when at the boarding gate?

Will your unused checked allowance cover that event? Or are extra fees applicable?

Just wanted to let you know that I didn't pay when they checked HL at gate in USA and also here with JQ

And did you have a checked allowance that you didn't use? I will travelling JQi soon and while I'll try to keep my HLO down to 7kg-ish, if they really insist on checking it at the gate, I wonder if they'd charge me for it?

I have seen them weighing and charging for domestic flights. But perhaps only charging those on a HLO ticket?

In USA I had ticket for checked but elected to do HLO. On JQ Dom HLO. I think it best if someone that's done JQi is best placed to assist you here. Sorry I can't help

So on JQd, even without a paid checked allowance, they took away your HL at the gate but didn't charge you? That's interesting.

Well, check-in at MEL was at a kiosk that scanned my passport and issued a BP. Then at the gate, no-one was weighing carry-on. When I bought a bottle at duty free and suggested that it might make my carry-on exceed 7kg, they assured me that JQi will allow it. I'm not so 100% sure...

I doubt they have the systems in place to charge for it, likely it will just be gate checked. They have no systems to handle it on domestic either which was a rather amusing comedy of errors to watch.
