Hi Folks,
I've recently started a regular commute between Hobart and Perth. I'm able to purchase tickets as salary sacrifice through my work which sounded ok. If I do this, I need to book via the SERKO system so that the costs eventually make their way to my companies pay department and I get charged for the flights.
The problem is, that in most cases, I'm pretty sure the flight options that they offer are not particularly good deals and moderately expensive. If I log onto either qantas or virgin websites, in many cases I can find a seat on the same flight for less. There's no obligation for me to use the work system, but there's the percieved saving of buying them pre-tax so in theory they are considerably cheaper. In practice I think I can often do better by purchasing a bit closer to the travel dates rather than a couple of months ahead.
Cancelling/changing through the SERKO system always involves charges that dont make it worthwhile unless its a must do situation.
I'm after some suggestions on how to best work the systems to save me some money. I'm not so interested in loyalty points, just saving $$. My travel times and dates are fixed to meet connecting flights and work roster, but can book many months in advance.
Cheers,
Dogbert
