Hi Guys,

Currently have home insurance with Comminsure - they dont take AMEX though so I want to move it.

I price dup GIO but it was a good $300 a year more for the same policy and they seem to be the only one that accepts amex!

Doesn't look like there are any Bonus partners anymore either on MR website.

Ugh!

Any tips? who do you guys use?

Matt

+1, they also have often had bonus Amex MR bonus points (amex10x).
Am not sure "often" is the word I'd use, they did now 15 months ago have 10x, then 5x last year and for last 4 months they have had no bonus. I think that no bonus is the new normal sorry, there is no indication they intend to bring this back, in fact they had 3 insurers last year and all have dropped off the bonus list.

A copy-paste list of insurers from the Amex website (have not edited for who offers which products):

  • AAMI Insurance
  • AIA (American International Insurance)
  • Allianz
  • ANZ Insurance
  • APIA
  • BUPA
  • GIO
  • HBA
  • HCF
  • NIB
  • RACQ
  • Suncorp
  • The Buzz Insurance
  • Youi Insurance
I've used AAMI, Suncorp, and RACQ - they don't surcharge :) Just note that if your Amex card is actually issued by Amex, you might want to check that it will earn >0.5pts/$1, as the majority of Amex-Amex cards have this restriction. ;)

I use the insurance company that offers the best cover for me. In the event of a claim credit card points aren't going to be the important thing to me

I argued with them that RACQ is an 'auto club' and any payments should not be at half rate for points (being insurance PMT not confident), still waiting to hear as I sent in writing via the Plat website.

The only way to do it. No good having some FF points in your account if you cannot get your claim accepted and quickly finalised.

Got to say, apart from $ value covered, I have no idea who will offer the best product. The PDSs seem relatively similar so how do you choose? Past experience?

Or if you have to fight whether it is "flood" or not.

You need to check the definitions of terms, and what is covered what is not. Suggest you read Choice magazine.

Agree that good insurance is value above the points... but I'm really only looking for contents cover... so although they are not all created equal, they are created similar. I note that AAMI and GIO are significantly more expensive when compared to NRMA or AAMI which is interesting, for seemingly identical cover/excess ..Hm, in the vicinity of $300 a year- that to me is not worth the points.

NRMA had been noted that they are a lot nastier when you try to make a claim. I remember I've seen this in Choice member survey and ABC TV. So be careful.

CGU do as well but they don't advertise it.

The Buzz ceased to exist some time ago and towards the end, they were (in my case anyway) more expensive than NRMA. You might want to add Shannons to the list and mind you, 1/3 of that list is owned by AAMI's parent AAI or something like that likewise a lot of them belongs to IAG.

With Contents Insurance, good to review the limits on items such as jewellery, artwork, collections etc. if you require more cover than the policy limits you will need to list your items.

Also decide if you want extra cover such as accidental damage cover, and cover for for your portable valuables away from home, it costs more though.

Yup if you actually read the PDS, you will see differences, now some if those differences may be trivial or not important for everyone.

NRMA/RACV not accepting AMEX, hmmm interesting choice by such a large corporate

Made me sad to see that NRMA don't accept Amex. Will have to look for another insurer.
