for whichtime period of travel? which airline? i checked qantas for March 2013 and it was quite cheap.

also looks like the global sale they had finished last night too..

Glad I booked last week! I paid $1200 for late June on QF A380.

$900 fares are not the norm on the route these would be sale fares, Cathay is normally around $1100-1200 on SYD-HKG for their standard economy fares (although they do discount below 1k but ver sporadically).

Have a look at Virgin Atlantic as they are often the cheapest followed by Qantas, Singapore Airlines and Cathay as most expensive, as others have mentioned the closeness of your departure is going to make it difficult to find cheap fares though...

thanks. are there any pics on what the seats are like? I tried to find some video on youtube but no luck

They've flying the a340-600 on this route so here's what I could find:

Flew them in 2004/5 Syd -> HKG and back then they were awesome. Great quiet plane, fantastic crew and even better that they had BOGOF seats so came to about $450 pp return :)

thanks. how did u find the seats? average for Economy?

Pretty OK actually - Day flight over to HKG so just watched IFE's/ate/drank.

Flight on the way back was fine and don't seem to recall any bad experience (managed to even get some zzz's).

Arriving in Sydney in the am was another matter all together...

nice. which seats do you prefer?

I think when we flew we were on the 777-300 so its probably not relevant now given their flying the 340-600 on that route. Check out seatguru.com (emergency exits are usually winners).

I noticed Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Australia both fly directly to Hong Kong. would virgin Australia be the best one to go on (assuming fares are the same) for a gold velocity member?

Yes due to the points bonus for a VA flight

Do they? I thought DJ just codeshare with VS.

I found the seat pitch to be rather tight on the A346. I went on VS in Feb/Mar last year. The flight over was magic, the plane wasn't even half full so we had unlimited room to spread out. On the way back it was chockers & I couldn't get comfortable. Service on board was good though & it was good to get to ride on a relatively rare bird such as the A346. :)

That's correct. VA don't have the aircraft available to fly there anyway.

Last week I was looking at fares to HKG in late July, I saw SYD-HKG return on QF127/128 (A380) for $780. It was through ebookers.
