I'm a Gold Virgin Australia member but am very confused on how to book a flight from Sydney to Hong Kong and take some advantage (if any) from the Gold Membership.

Does anyone know the best way to do this? possibly through Singapore airlines or Virgin Atlantic?

Thanks in advance

What are you trying to take advantage of, VS earn has changed recently while SQ has better lounge options with no lounge on VS ex SYD.

I think there is priority checkin for Gold Velocity members.

Is it also true that Singapore Airlines doesn't fly directly to HK?

Both offer the same benefits in that area, given VS have an average reputation in Y and no lounge access, SQ via SIN may well be a better option.

thanks.
Could one spend a few days in SIN if they wished rather than wait the connection time to HK?

I'm doing SYD-SIN-HKG-SIN-KUL-SIN-SYD next Sunday to Thursday all on SQ. Will earn points and status on it. I'm currently a Velocity Gold member and will be able to utilise the SQ lounges, priority checking and boarding. Hope that helps.

nice. how much did it cost you? I saw a SYD- HKG for around $898 which stops over in SG.

does your flight cost the same? (assuming it's also Economy)

I think it was around $1600 (there are 6 legs all up) - this is all booked on a Flexi Saver fare in class W and Y from memory.

Just be careful on the class you book into as it may not earn points or status credits.

Thanks. so how does one link their velocity number when they book? did u do it directly through Singapore airlines?

When you book online through Singapore Airlines , in the section where you add your name to the booking , there is also the option to select your FF Program and add your Velocity Membership No.

i thought VS uses the Air NZ lounge in sydney....doesnt gold give you access?

No it doesn't as a VA Gold or Plat. Only gives access to VS operated lounges (i.e. Clubhouses). Same deal with SQ although they have their own lounge in Sydney. EY gives access wherever their own FF'ers have access so the partnership is much more comprehensive.

The international lounge access - particularly ex Australia is a bit of a shambles.

If you book on sq website I think the max stopover time is about 27hrs. It gives you various flight options. Try and get a A380 on both legs. You might be able to extend the stopover time by booking offline through a travel agent. Make sure you get a fare that earns points and sc. some don't on SQ.

A lot of fares include a stopover, if you use the multicity tool it works, that also then qualifies you for the stopover holiday rates at hotels!
