Many thanks for all the suggestions, folks. I'm not traveling until November so have some time to mull over options, thankfully! It seems a lot of the cheaper options involve giving up a window, but there do at least seem to be many options near the main station.
I'm probably aiming at the lower cost hotels (as it'll be just me) so I've been looking in the ballpark ~AUD$100-120 per night. A lot of options at that pricepoint, but relying on just Agoda/Booking/TripAdvisor reviews leaves me a bit aprehensive.
