Over the years I have migrated in preference from staying at Hotels to staying in private Holiday Rentals. It got me thinking, what is everyone else's preference for accommodation types when they head off on holiday?

The cost between hotels and private rentals is negligible and when you travel with friends or family you can save a heap of money, get superior facilities and have more space and privacy than you would in a Hotel or resort.

I just finished writing my review of FortyTwo in Queenstown NZ which cost well over $1000/night, but still - this represented cost savings for what we would've paid at the Sofitel. Also, if you book through a managing agent (like Touch of Spice in NZ) the risk of dealing direct with the property owner who could rip you off is minimal.

What is your preference? Have you jumped on the Holiday Rental bandwagon?

Due to the number (anywhere from 4 to 10 people) we use a holiday rental - I like the extras like in hawaii the Esky, boards, snorkle gear etc. I use homeaway dot com - I have a trip coming up in USA/Canada which I will be doing a Trip report on - all of the acc is holiday rental but for the Grand Hyatt at DFW and Kamloops cheapie one night hotel.

The extras are a bonus aren't they... you can get some holiday rentals in the Marlborough Sounds of NZ that have jetski's, canoes and other fun stuff... try getting those at a hotel without paying through the nose lol....

When travelling alone or as a couple we will use hotels.
With family ( of 6 )private accomodation almost always.
FortyTwo looks amazing and Queenstown really has a fabulous selection of quality holiday rentals which I agree are far more comfortable ( as well as being cost-effective) for a large group.
We use Stayz quite a lot when travelling in Oz and there is a varied selection of properties there from budget to luxury.
My favourite Queensland holiday home is

But sssh!! don't tell everyone ;)

Hotels for me, though as mentioned already above, I can see the sense if travelling in a large group. I hardly ever do that though and I like the facilities of a proper hotel, gym, pool, room service, blah blah.

The question that arises in my mind though is ... would I still prefer a hotel, even with a large group, if money was no object? I think I probably would.

1 or 2 nights is OK for a hotel room but more than that and I generally look for a holiday rental.

The extra rooms in a rental give you more of a "at home" feeling. You can spread your gear out, watch TV without lying on the bed and find a power point without having to unplug something from behind a desk.

have booked a 2 bedroom apartment in Barcelona with "Friendly rentals" for 4/5 to 15/5. will report back in the future.
have to get courier delivery to the Friendly Rentals office, prior or during our stay here, and their office is very happy to receive and sign for courier delivery for us.

have used Stayz for local houses, predominately holiday houses in Bundeena for Girls Weekends, and have never had any probs, and that is usually 7 - 9 of us.
have used Somersett Apartments for stays in Singapore and Tokyo before. all good with those, although the breckie is terrible in Singapore.

Hotels usually for me but now that I have a newly expanded family I might start to shift to Vacation rentals.
