I know, according to the T&Cs at Frequent Flyer - Using Points - Qantas & Partner Classic Awards - About Classic Awards that you can "Book as early as possible - up to 353 days in advance."

My question is do I need to wait until the return date is < 354 days away, or can I start the booking once the departure date is 353 days away?

Looking to book return flights to europe and want the best chance of getting seats at time we want.

Thanks

You have to wait for the return date to book the return basically you need the flights to be loaded. Obviously you can take the risk and book two one way awards

Obvious idea which I hadn't thought of

Not a big risk - we'll travel anyway (and have to travel at this time, though actual departure and arrival dates are a little flexible), and the worst outcome is we travel on points one way and paid on the return.

Have been doing two one ways 353 days out for each way.
Cancelling fee in points is modest.
