I know there are lots of threads on the QF J RTW redemption fare, but I specifically want to know when is the best time to book.

For example, if I want to leave in May 2017, I would on a normal redemption, book the outward leg as soon as it becomes available. And then when the return becomes available a few weeks later, do the same.

But if we're going RTW, how does this work? Should I wait until my last leg becomes available and do it then or should I try the outward one asap. As I'm wanting an IB flight in or out of HAV, that's my main priority, the rest I can work around, so I'm somewhat flexible about getting to and from HAV (I know I'll have to buy a fare from HAV to Mexico or somewhere else or vv separately)

Im WP and there are 2 pax (may partner is Gold).

Would really appreciate any advice.

IMHO book what you can right away, then call up and add the other sectors as they become available. It will cost you in points changes but it's worth it.

Edit: Of course right away means in May (I thought I read March)

Just do the same process. Especially for J flights. Book them as soon as they become available. Book the first one online if you can. And then call up and add the other sectors.

My last 2 J RTW flights I booked basically the day they became available. Last time I got CX for SYD-FRA as there was no QF doing (forget EK, never seen a reward flight on them) and picked the only 2 seats in QF LHR-SYD (admittedly Jan 7 so super-peak). May this year we are doing SYD-LHR-JFK-SYD on no QF flights at all, but using CX, BA & AA. Means a detour through HKG but life could be worse spending 24 hours in a J seat with Cathay :)

I'm a no-one in status so probably don't even rate with Qantas and my experience is book early and book fast as they don't hang around.

Can't use EK for the RTW anyway as they're not in oneworld.

I've managed to book a fairly complex RTW all in one go about 10 months out (that included a sector on BA1 from LCY).

CX tends to have better availability and AA opens at 330 days so a bit later on than Qantas.

As always, the sooner you can do it, the better.
