How many points PRE MAY 2005 was a SYD-PER return in J??

Now 72,000. Doh! Even 1 way J/1 way Y is going to cost 54,000 pts.

Shame I used to book those J flights a fair bit when I lived in Perth. Crazy number of points now!

It used to be the old Zone 2 travel (2,001-5,400 miles) at 2 x 2,041 miles return or 4,082. As per previous answers, this was was 45,000 points in J. FWIW, Zone 2 Y was 30,000.

Now it is calculated as two one way trips, when, if direct, each in Zone 3 (1,201-2,400) at 18,000 per trip in Y and 36,000 per trip in J. This totals 36,000 in for a Y return trip and 72,000 for J return.

Another anomaly of the new system is when booking an award BNE-PER. Awards are rare on the non-stop flights now that the A332 has been replaced by 73H aircraft. But there is plenty of availability via SYD, MEL, ADL, CNS etc.

With the one-way distance being the sum of the individual legs, the various options span zones 3 or 4 depending on the transit point. So BNE-ADL-PER is 2324 miles, while BNE-SYD-PER and BNE-MEL-PER are both over 2400 miles.

So the routing does make a difference for the points calculation, and is why Mrs NM and Mini NM#2 and 4 are going to PER via ADL in January.

But one advantage of the one-way awards is that we were unable to find availability on daytime return flights in business class, so ended up booking 2 x business class seats BNE-ADL-PER and 3 x economy seats PER-ADL-BNE. Meant we had to pay the surcharges for the infant in economy, but we were happy with the end result. 2 x 36K = 72K points outbound and 3 x 25K = 75K points for the return flight.
