I'm looking on qantas.com.au and trying to find some international fares that earn SC/points as economy not discount economy. Where does one look for such fares or do they not exist?

You might need to speak to a travel agent.

They are however so hideously expensive I'm not sure why you would bother unless your company had a strict economy only policy. It'd probably be comparable or maybe even cheaper to book premium economy or business.

Agree, that is how I have done it before.

Not always the case. QF does offer some reasonable value fares that book into Y booking class. For example, a YLFF fare basis is likely to be way less than a YRT fare basis. In the one random case I just checked, YLFF was about one third the YRT fare basis (for a BNE-HKG return). So if you need the flexibility associated with Y fare class, then it can still be reasonable so long as you avoid the YRT fare types.

For the uneducated, whats YLFF and YRT? And where do you go about finding a YLFF fare?

The are "Fare Basis" that book into Y fare class. All fares have their own fare basis that is generally described by a series of characters where the first letter is generally the booking class (Y in this case).

In these specific example, the L in YLFF refers to Low season (K is shoulder season, H is high season). The FF refers to a Flexi Fare.

In the case of YRT, the RT stands for Return.

Each has different fare rules and cost ($2.2K for YLFF and over $6.5K for YRT for the BNE-HKG I noted) but both book into Y class availability bucket and earn full Y status credits with QFF.

Another example are TT fares. Typically the Y fares offered are only a bit above B class fares. However the QFF website doesn't seem to offer Y until B is booked out.

Many years ago I remember asking Qantas what the full price of a SYD-BKK return in economy was on a specific flight that did not have cheap availability. I have never asked again after hearing the figure of $5,500 mentioned! I could have gotten business class for the same price or cheaper....

SYD-BKK-SYD using a YRT fare is indeed $6679 plus taxes and surcharges.
SYD-BKK-SYD using a YLFFS fare is $1933 plus taxes and surcharges.

Both book into Y fare class and both earn full economy status credits with Qantas. Indeed you can snag a TLFFS Premium Economy for $1600 plus taxes and surcharges, but of course that requires T availability.
