I have most of a day to kill in Dallas/Fort Worth and would appreciate any tips for places to visit, either in the cities or area around, taking up 6-8 hrs. I can hire a car from the airport.

I have seen the JFK site, book repository and Dallas city centre, and have visited the outlet mall near the airport - Grapevine, I think?

I see that the Davey Crockett National Forest is just out of reach. Damn! ;)

What month?
Not enough time to get down and back to Salt Lick BBQ at Driftwood for a tasty all you can eat plate in the Texas hill country unfortunately
Maybe Fort Worth Stockyards, see the longhorns get paraded down the street. A fine cut of steak at the Cattleman's Steakhouse, and a visit to Billy Bob's for a bit of line dancing and live country music. :D

On the subject of Dallas. In April 2016 the wife and I arrived in Dallas for a 2 day stop-over at the start of a 9 week visit to USA. We dropped the bags at the hotel and started to walk the city. Within 1 hour, 10 minutes of arriving, I was struck by a DART bus crossing the Elm and N Houston Streets intersection, at the Book Depository Building at Dealey Plaza. And no, I did not step off the kerb looking the wrong way or wandered amongst traffic taking photos. I was crossing Houston Street in a marked foot crossing with the green walk sign. The bus driver just did not see me on a huge, wide-open intersection. 3 weeks in hospital with a smashed kneecap ended our 9 week visit prematurely.

However we did return exactly 12 months later where we received a royal reception when we returned to the hospital (not many Australians end up in the trauma ward there for 3 weeks) and also was able to take in a lot of Dallas places of interest - The Book Building Museum (a must visit), the Reunion Tower for views over the city, the JFK Memorial (a few blocks away from Dealey Plaza), the house where L H Oswald was living at the time of the shooting and the picture theatre where he later shot the Police Officer.

It is an interesting city with plenty of history, unfortunately not all good, but nevertheless, very interesting for those with any sense of history. Also plenty of opportunity to enjoy some local Texan hospitality with a BBQ ribs, baked beans, slaw and sauce meal at many good restaurants and bars. And that is just the city itself.

Just be careful crossing the roads and watch out for the big yellow buses. And make sure you have comprehensive travel insurance. My hospital bill alone was $US105,500 plus medical evacuation back to Australia.

Another option for a slightly shorter layover for those without access to an airline lounge is the Centurion Lounge: Dallas, Fort Worth

Showers, massage, reasonably good food and free drinks (just need to tip). Free for Platinum Amex members, or $50 for anyone with an Amex card. I had 4 hours and it made for a much more pleasant arrival.
