Apologies if this is answered elsewhere – I have recently relocated to the USA. My status renewal is end of Sep and I don't have any plans to visit Australia before then. I should have no problem retaining gold with trips on AA and BA planned in the next year, but my problem will be the 4 eligible QF flights. My understanding is that codeshares count towards this, although in the US QF can't sell codeshares unless they are linked to a QF metal flight.

Are there any strategies to tick off these 4 flights without visiting Aus or doing the LHR-SIN QF1/2 flights? Can it be achieved?

To be more specific here, what sudoer is talking about is the fact that you need to take 4 flights on any of JetStar and/or Qantas Group flights that accrue status credits. This would include JetStar's Asia operations which are actually quite extensive, some examples:
  • Tokyo Narita (NRT) to Osaka Kansai (KIX)
  • Manilla (MNL) to Singapore (SIN)
  • Kuala Lampur (KUL) to Singapore (SIN)
There are many more but the idea here is that you could fly somewhere in Asia for to get those 4 squiggles. Additionally, JetStar operates domestically within NZ meaning you could fly something like Auckland (AKL) to Wellington (WLG) to get said squiggles.

“Squiggles” or the “~” annotation on QFF statements indicating eligible flight sectors was enhanced away a couple of years ago. The only indicator now are the red planes on your FF dashboard.

That aside, Classic Reward flights on QF metal* can earn SCs and eligible sectors for Points Club (PC) members. Although, achieving and retaining PC living overseas could be even more difficult.

It would largely depend on local credit card issuers being able to credit to QFF. Wouldn't be too hard from the USA.
Quite probably. Not accessing the first 20K flying miles is a handicap. Wine deliveries to friends back home would work!

They could always just order expensive wine from QF Wine. Although one wonders what the shipping and duty costs are to ship the wine to the US (or elsewhere)? Perhaps QF Wine should offer a bundle of plonk service where you can order cases of wine for bonus points but never receive them!

Presumably if they are flying a OneWorld airline like AA or BA they would earn status credits and equally important frequent flyer points to that 20,000 point cap.

Yes, any flying points will count to 20k cap.
