The usual, simpler/fairer/making it easier for you. Just received the following from IB:
Flashback, at Iberia Plus we know that the way people travel is changing, that’s why we’re adapting to evolve with the times. The way you collect Avios on your flights is about to change.

Until now, Avios have been earned based on air miles flown, but from now on you will collect Avios for every euro* you spend. This new method is clearer and easier, just the way you like things.

€1 = 5 Avios, applies to net spending, excluding taxes and charges.

Of course, every time you fly, you will still collect Elite Points the same way you always have, enabling you to move through tiers and unlock more advantages.

Will BA follow suit next?

The irony with these moves to revenue-based models is it encourages you to shift your points earn from flights to credit cards.

As I saw in one US forum, most US customers do not care because they earn the bulk of their Avios from Chase and Amex ha!

Iberia are moving to an Avios earning structure based on flight spend (vs distance x farecode). BA due to follow in 2023 😞. Commentary from headforpoints below. Who knows if QR will follow then even more?

At least Tier Points and redemptions not functioning as cashback for the time being
