I am almost a year into my switch to BA and am now starting to reap the benefits that a decent TP haul brings.
A couple of weeks ago I booked SYD-LHR-SYD in Y+ for $3.7k and applied one of my GUF's to upgrade into J. It is in stark contrast to playing the QF upgrade lottery.
Let me take a step back and explain.........
At 2500 TP's (Tier Points are pretty much the same as QF SC's) you earn what is known as a GUF2 (Gold Upgrade For Two), and at 3500 TP's you earn Two GUF1's (Gold Upgrade for One). These upgrades certificates can be applied to reward bookings as well as revenue bookings and are reliant on the lowest revenue fare class being available in the cabin you wish to upgrade to. The certificate covers the whole PNR - BA flights only. (There does however appear to be a bit of confusion regarding mixed carrier bookings - so beware.)
BA's equivalent to QF P1 is GGL (Gold Guest List) In order to qualify you need to earn 5000 TP's in your first year and to retain is 3000 TP's. It starts to get even more interesting here because upon qualification you receive a Gold Redemption Certificate (Joker). (Interestingly this initial Joker expires upon the completion of the membership year and is replaced by two more e.g. Year starts 1st January, you hit 5000 TP's in October and receive a Joker, if it is not used by 31st December it expires and is replaced by two jokers, if it is used it is still replaced by two more on January 1st.)
The Joker can be used to free up to 5 reward seats and can be used in conjunction with points or GUF's. So for example if you have a GUF2 and 2 GUF1's you could use Avios or cash to book four J seats SYD-LHR-SYD, use the GUF's to upgrade to F and the Joker to ensure F availability. (There is no need to worry about J availability in this case - just F) It sounds confusing, and quite frankly I have found it a little confusing, but I see this benefit as absolutely huge.
At 6000 TP's you receive two more jokers!
