I have been hovering around the QF silver membership for some time. The past year I have taken my flights to the US via UA, due mainly to their much better FF program.
I had an email from Qantas letting me know that they were reviewing my membership, and if I had any plans or reasons for them continuing my silver membership they would consider it.
I took a punt and wrote back, letting them know that Qantas has better seats, food, movies and staff, but UA were cheaper and had a better FF program that allowed me to cash in miles much easier than Qantas.
Anyhow, they wrote back and provided me with another 12 months at silver. Nice for the small number of domestic flights I do.
Anyone else ever had that happen before. From my point of view this is very smart play from Qantas. And now as it turns out, my domestic travel plans have suddenly tripled!!!

It is fairly common for this to happen. If you prefer the QF flight to USA over the UA one, then you could always fly QF and credit to AA which has a similar redemption level to UA
