I did a search and saw a rtn flight to LA. So i booked from BNE to LA, as my boss is in the US I asked if while on holidays did he want me to go to the office in the US as i was so close. anyway. then I went to book my return leg and the flight is not available.
i rang qantas to complain and they say that they leave the return flights open for people going both way (ME). but you need to book the tickets all at once, something which is not mentioned in the fine print.

Is there anything i can do to get the rtn flight which is still available? I asked for a do over to rebook my tickets and they wont let me.

I guess the short term solution is to cancel the booking and then proceed with a new one. If it's within 24 hours you might be able to beg Qantas over the phone to cancel it without penalty (possibly even without the Telephone Assistance Fee).

When you say the return flight is not available (i.e. by booking a one-way from the US), is that you cannot see it at all, or is it you cannot see the flight with the price that you want?

It's quite conceivable for Qantas (in fact, any airline) to provide availability in terms of marketed options, i.e. one-ways versus returns. They usually book into different fare classes (e.g. if you book a return you can get Sale or Red e-Deals, but if you book a one-way you may only be able to get Super Savers or greater). You should be able to get very expensive seats all the time (e.g. doesn't matter how you book), unless the flight is getting full (or expected to be very busy).

In any case, you probably shouldn't have booked 2 x one-ways because in many cases you were going to be done over for price (i.e. usually cheaper to buy a return rather than 2 x one-ways), and I don't believe it is the prerogative of Qantas (or any airline, for that matter) to tell you that (as much as they are not going to educate everyone on the intricacies of inventory management). But hey, that's why we're here, right?

ouch.

can i suggest a couple of things.

1. Has it actually been ticketed ie have you received the email confirmation. Maybe you can get on the phone to a different CSO and get it rebooked as a return.

2. Two X one ways are usually more expensive. Is it worth coping the cancellation fee and rebooking the return? As much as it hurts.

3. Look at other very respectable airlines that do offer one way flights to Australia ie VA

Maybe others will have other ideas.

I am a big believer in a second phone call as you might strike gold on your second attempt.

+1.

This is not only with QF but with literally any type of phone support you can think of.

Are we talking about a points or a paid flight here?
If it is points, then that is the luck of the draw. You may be able to get other options that by calling (i.e try CX). You also have the ASA option, but that may cost more then the classic would.
If its a paid flight, then you could always look around for the cheaper one way flight.
