Re: The totally off-topic thread

You had better copy that link into the grammar thread. I reckon it could create some interesting discussion.

Hmmm. Clearly I haunt the wrong fish and chip shops. I've only known them as scallops. Never heard the word fritter used here.

To me they have always been potato cakes. Scallops is a very eastern states thing, I have found.

Re: Grammar Discussions

And, it's self explanatory. I never felt comfortable calling them scallops when that is a completely different kettle of fish item also often sold in a fish and chippy.

I agree, potato cakes are called potato cakes.

Re: Grammar Discussions

Just replied on the other thread. Living in SA and I've never seen scallops called fritters. :p

Fell for this one many, many years ago when I thought that half a dozen scallops and some fish and chips would be nice for lunch. Sadly not what I expected.

Yes. I've seen them as potato cakes too. But not fritters.

And they are fabulous along with the Bruny Island Get Shucked oysters. :D:lol::D

Re: Grammar Discussions

Unless it's a potato that is fried. :p

So what is the shellfish scallop called in SA? Long time since I was there now, but I remember the little shop on the Esplanade at Marino was a great place to get fish and chips.

Surely you have had scalloped potatoes - sometimes known as potato dauphinoise!

I remember racing out of High School to gallop to the fish & chip shop near the station to order 3 potato scallops (3 for 6d) before the train came. Great value, wonderfully cooked and we worked off most of the effects of this wonder food in the race to the shop.

Re: Grammar Discussions

In my experience in Brisbane, a "scallop" always refers to the animal found in the sea, unless you were at a snack counter and there were no such cooked sea creatures available for sale but the potato one was. And even then, it is often referred to explicitly as a "potato scallop". I can't recall one instance in my life where the potato scallop was referred to only as "scallop".

A Fisherman's Basket at a fish and chip shop which advertises that you get 2 scallops with your order is almost certainly referring to your receiving sea scallops, not potato scallops.

The only real war left with respect to the sea scallop is whether you prefer with or without the roe.

Scallop of course. :D

And yes, strictly speaking it's a potato scallop.

Scalloped potatoes and potato scallops/cakes are two different things. They're potato cakes in Victoria, only heard them called scallops in qld....

I used 'fritter' when I lived in SA, aren't scallops something that lives in the ocean?

They are also called scallops in NSW (or at least they are in downtown Newcastle).
In the deep fried food capital of the universe AKA Glasgow they are known as potato fritters.
