Hi I think I need some help ...
Flying bris to Joberg on feb 25 return march 3
I have purchased 2 x premium economy tickets
I am looking to upgrade using ff points to business class we are long standing qff members we haven't travelled much recently due to health reasons and have dropped to bronze status
I am wondering if joining qantas club as we will travel often this year will helps us with the process of being successful in the lotto that seems to be the upgrade request system with qantas?
Can anyone help suggest the best way to help me?

Joining Qantas Club never got me an upgrade.

Welcome to AFF!

Have got an upgrade request to business class at the moment? Upgrade requests were available at T-90 days and it is now T-38 days to flight so there will be a number of requests to business class already in front of you.

If you join Qantas Club you will move past Bronze members in the upgrade request list but you still be behnd higher status frequent flyers and any Qantas Lounge members that have put an upgrade reuqest early.

Also take note that these QF flights are some of the hardest to find business class availability let alone getting upgrade requests to business as only a Qantas Lounge member.

Good luck anyway....

Thanks! I have just booked and have now made upgrade request for flight. I could have booked business class they say have quite a lot of seats available also there is first class on this flight too? Fare difference was $4000 qantas lady told me to do premium & try for upgrade as only 35000 pp each way, now I am concerned.
Thinking about joining qc however cheapest I can find is $805 seems I may have gotten wrong "advice"
Is there anyway to see exactly how many seats left or how many requests?

Putting in an early request never got me an upgrade either. I thought they applied the pecking order shortly before departure and early request meant nothing much. Cheers skip

Don't join for one flight. Use the money for therapy at the other end. You are at the bottom of the list basically and only being of 'value' to QF will really help you, it is a lottery in any case.

Calibrate your expectations to fly in W+

If you join AFF as a Gold member (membership is $50/year) and one of the privileges is discounted Qantas Lounge membership as part of the AFF corporate scheme.

Try posting details of your flights on the availability thread and someone with Expert Flyer may ley you know what availability is like for your flight.

Early requests puts you close to the top of the upgrade points list for your status.

Hmmm. Downselling! If you changed your mind sure they'd be happy to accept the extra $$$. If you were looking to fly OW more and had the $$$ I would add into the mix the extra SCs - 400 for J vs 200 for Y+ which would get you more than 1/2 way closer to gold status and no QC membership fee. Plus lounge access on your flights anyway.

Cheers skip

Re: If I join the qantas club will it help me get international upgrades using qff po

I take it your flying out of SYD on QF operated aircraft and not going to PER to join the QF codeshare on SAA metal?

Re: If I join the qantas club will it help me get international upgrades using qff po

Joining will help, but not much.

The yield people will look at the flight around 24 hours before departure and make the call then on who if any will be upgraded. It may happen earlier if they want to get that task out of the way.

If you are flying on a Tuesday you will have more chance as that's the lightest travel day of the week generally for this route.

I was flying AKL-lAX on a sold out flight some time ago and was op-upgraded to J on check-in. (I was was not surprised as the flight was showing 0's in economy fare buckets with 9's in business buckets for some time).

I sat beside/near a group of three QP members who had been summoned in the AKL J lounge and given Business class BP's.

So I believe QP membership has some status in the Proactive Upgrade List.

Early requests puts you close to the top of the upgrade points list for your status.
Even though the QFF t&C's used to indicate this, it appears not to have been the case for several years.

See here: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....rades-the-pecking-order-14811.html#post194270

I now believe the order is:
  1. Status (CL>WP>SG>PS...)
  2. Fare Class (...B>H>K>L>M>S>V...)
  3. Length of time a member of QFF
In which case an early request level does not necessarily put you in front of a later requester with the same status. Of course, it won't hurt to put your request in as early as possible.

I thought red roo had denied that serfty - but it seems they just confirmed that status was the key thing.
...
Yes, they just confirmed the limited information currently stated in the T&C's.
...
I am guessing the upgrade requests J -> F are processed:

J -> D -> I ?
That would would conceivably be the case. Also:

  1. Business to First
  2. PE to Business
  3. WHY to Business
  4. WHY to PE

Reward status and separate it by fare class. I guess that makes sense.

Re: If I join the qantas club will it help me get international upgrades using qff po

Hey, i don't know if its the case for taking out Qantas Club membership through AFF, but i work for a Govt Dept and while certain people within the Dept can have QC paid for, other staff can take out a personal membership at coproate rates... Anyway, still too much i thought for just one trip i am taking in April-June/July 2011...

then read somewhere that Qantas will pro rata the rate for memberships for part of the year, so now am going to take it out near mid March (we renew memberships end of june or in july i think) and should only be something like $118 i was quoted... which sounds pretty good to me... with all the stops i will be making i think i can eat and drink $118 worth plus showers and internet etc, etc...

different case for you i know as your thinking of taking out a full year membership for lots of travel in the future, but you might want to see when AFF QC memberships renew and if you can get a cheaper pro rata rate for part year membership and see if joining it can also help u with your upgrade request???

Is it a small government department? because that sounds like an expensive corporate rate at about $480 per year. In the past I have paid that much for 12 months on a commonwealth government corporate rate - but for a BIG department.

Re: If I join the qantas club will it help me get international upgrades using qff po

Use to be 1600, down to 1200, cost cutting and all... and over in WA, so probably not as many people jetting around as Comm Department or other organisations on the eastern states between melb and syd etc... it would be nice to get it at that rate...

Re: If I join the qantas club will it help me get international upgrades using qff po

Overall, the Qantas Club facilities have deteriorated over the past number of years, and I recently asked if Qantas would consider recognizing long term Club members, with a rise in status, for better upgrade chances, seating preference etc. For instance 10 years plus might be silver, 20 years gold etc.

No go. Nice letter back, but basically stated that, those that travel extensively are the only ones they are interested in for status.

So Qantas Club is not economic for a one time flight, and I have never received an upgrade on international either, and I have been a member for many years.
