If Qantas gave me double points/status in error, should I tell them?

Should I let them know?

For some strange reason, a missing point claim has given me double the number of points and status which I should received. Well, they are very small numbers, being a non-QF discount Y flight in the SE Asia region. Should I let them know about it?

I doubt it will sink Qantas somehow...

And I'm sure they will get them back (and more) at some point by screwing you with telephone assistance fees for bookings they make sure you are unable to complete on your own or some other clawback scheme...

This has happened to me a few times in the past, once for quite substantial amounts; I have found that even when you call their attention to it, they always let you keep your "ill-gotten gains". So it probably pays to tell them; that way, if there is any dispute in the future, you can put your hand on your heart and say you have done the right thing.

Of course not!

As a customer you get screwed all the time- ften enough you have to call/email and chase for points from 3rd party companies! Nothing morally bad about acting the same way as the big corporations do

As jimminy cricket would say, "always let your conscience be your guide"
However if it were me, i wouldnt worry

Interesting result in the poll!

Back in the day, when I was Old Gold, I nearly always got op upped (n=98%). On domestic flights never got the increased benefit, on abut 50% of international flights, I did. I mentioned this to a senior QF staffer that I knew; reponse was don't worry about it!

Depends on the price of honesty. If the checkout chick gives me too much change I give it back. If they don't give me enough, I tell them. Mistakes happen. And it cuts both ways.

Why is big business fair game?

I agree. People are still people and mistakes happen. The thoughts about big business doing the wrong thing so therefore we can also do the wrong thing sounds like a bit of a schoolyard argument.... "But he hit me Miss, so I hit him back!"

I'm a bit of a believer that if you do good things, good things happen to you. Chances are you'll get to keep the points anyway.

Storyteller I agree with you about giving it back. I always do as you don't need to cheat.

I’d say no if you really needed it, but with the acknowledgement that it could be reversed if they worked it out later.

Now Mrscove would not know as she would not ever check her QF account. She just looks maybe once every 3 months to see if she has the points and then looks at what is available.

I believe I would tell them. OK, I'd like to think I'd tell them. :p Unless they had recently screwed me over in some way, then I might consider a tit-for-tat.

Seriously, I believe I would. But only once, and only if it did not inconvenience me (did not involve any 'work' for me)*. If they did nothing about it I would not persist.

*To show what I mean by that, here's a story I heard a few years ago. A guy checked his bank balance and found a very large amount, which was not his, had been deposited into it. He rang his bank (CBA or NAB, can't recall which) and told them about it. The bank employee said "Oh I see Mr Smith, you'll need to go to your branch and..." He was cut off by Mr Smith who quite reasonably said "Excuse me? I have to physically go to the branch to rectify your mistake? I don't think so"

I would say tell them - if they want to let you keep it great. If not that is fine. If they don't want to do anything about it - well then you could say their actions imply / lead you to believe they want you to keep the extra points?

Which brings me to this true story - AMEX gave me like 75k extra points as part of the Platinum Charge Card promotion. I emailed them once (got an acknowledgement) and called them up another time to let them know - they said they'll do something about it (though the guy on the phone said if they don't do anything in 2 months its probably yours to keep). Its been like 4 months and the point are still sitting there...

I wouldn't tell them, I haven't told them, and I can sleep at night quite comfortably....
