Another assimilation by the borg *hides his iinet polo shirt he's wearing* :)

Here's hoping all the Netspace staff keep their jobs in Melbourne and aren't forced to move to Perth (although the new office they have in Subiaco is very nice).

Not sure I would be calling them the Borg, given they are a big customer .

Their offices are nice in Subiaco (they were much handier to our company when they were in the next door building in Perth), I think having staff assets in Melbourne will be an asset moving forward, especially now that WA is not doing daylight saving, although I suspect some product managers might be on a steep learning curve or checking seek given there will no doubt be some overlap.

Awesome. I was literally about to fax off a termination letter to Netspace to start porting my parents over to iiNet Naked. Now I think I may hold off and see what they propose to offer Netspace customers over the transition.

Love iiNet. Rock on. :)

Every other acquisition that iiNet has performed on VIC/NSW (and even NZ) business has resulted in most of their staff going and shutting shop.

Their offices in Subiaco house a call centre for AU operating hours (after that it's South Africa where they have their own call centre they setup and employ staff directly - not a contract call centre).

I was fortunate enough to be shown around the office just after it opened. It's a very user-friendly office space (and a damn site more pleasant that most offices i've worked in :))

Melbourne assets would be good, but they like to centralise.

They even did away with their iHug call centre not that long ago. I guess the cost of keeping remote staff mounts up when you have such a big operation that relies on a lot of knowledge being transferred between staff.

"The Borg" is more an industry term for them. iiBorg. We will add your customer base and CRS to our own. Resistance is futile ;)

Never use iiNet - they did not renew one of my company's internet domain names which I subsequently lost to my opposition and all I got in compensation was a free registration of another domain name and a letter of apology (not on a letterhead and no full name given.)

Yes, and its the absolute truth. I did my time as a member of the Borg Empire during 99" (their old red logo was referred to internally as the Deathstar), and believe me they swallowed up more players during that single year than has been seen since.

Swinging OT here, but did you follow the auDA dispute resolution process? If you'd bothered there would have been a high chance you would have got the domain back.

This policy applies to domain expiry, and regardless of the ISP's alleged failure to renew or advise of pending expiry (which I highly doubt was the case having an substantial knowledge of how their billing system works) - what did you do to ensure your domain was promptly renewed when it expired?

Insert sound of crickets here.

markh - A domain is like any other business asset, a bank account, car, building, etc. It needs to be managed appropriately to ensure value is maintained and retained. If you knew the expiry was pending, did you call to make a payment for it? Did you check beforehand to find out, as you claim, why you'd not yet received an invoice?

Insert sound of crickets here.

If you don't take basic steps to protect your assets (calendar reminders for example in the case of domains, or frequently checking billing site for expiry) - then you have nobody but yourself to blame for the loss, and you'll get no sympathy from me whatsoever.

Woah !! Chill out dude !!! Yes I did follow through with auDA and I copy the email here:

Dear Markh

I acknowledge receipt of your formal complaint.

Connect West have confirmed that they did not send a renewal notice for the domain name xx_.com.au and as a result it was deleted from the database and has been registered by another party. As an auDA accredited registrar they are required to make reasonable commercial efforts to advise a registrant of the need to renew a domain name and they have clearly failed to do this.

The course of action available to me is to have Connect West review their systems and implement a new system which does not allow this to occur again. I have also asked them to send you a letter of apology and to provide you with other services as outlined in one of the emails which you attached.

I am unable to rescind the licence of the current registrant of xx_.com.au as the domain name was available for registration and they are eligiible to hold the domain name licence.

Please contact me again if you require any further information.

Kind Regards

99? I did my time there from 1996-1997, and saw them move from 150 St Georges Tce to QV1. Good times (god Dialup networking in windows 95 *shudder*). I saw the deathstar born. You should have seen some of the other options that were on offer (This was during the name change from iiNet Technologies to iiNet and the subsequent re-branding)

beat me to it. I've had success with AuDA in getting back domain names when this kind of thing happens.

*edit*
didn't see the AuDA response to CW. It's a bit of a case of Onus on the owner not just iiNet/CW. That's why I keep all my domains registered with one registrar which has a great control panel interface and emails me at least 3-4 times in the lead up to the domain expiring (starting at 90 days).

Yeah I totally agree that I should have kept my finger on the pulse a little more and I learnt a huge lesson, but when you get emails saying that not to do anything they will renew it for you, charge me for the registration then refunded me without acknowledging the mistake really sucked.

Buyer Beware.

I have had the pleasure of being with both as a customer and found no issues with either. Hopefully the coming together of two companies will shake Tel$tra and optus

I was never going to use Netspace again as they customer treatment is worse than appalling so I guess this solves the problem for me.
