I'm hoping for a bit of creative thinking regarding my award flight to Rome June 2020.

I booked an award flight last year for travel this coming June. Dream flight; Business, Q-suite on Qatar and not so many points since it was before Qantas increased points requirement. Now two things have happened; Coronavirus of course but also I have received a revised itinerary from Qantas whereby I leave Doha for Europe before I leave Adelaide for Doha! I have emailed Qantas to ask for clarification. In the meantime, I'm aware that I'm unlikely to be able to book such a fantastic award flight for such few points again. However, I'm hoping (dreaming) that if Qantas were to cancel these flights there might there be a chance they would rebook me on Qatar (same situation) at a later date rather than refunding my points and taxes requiring me to start all over again. What do you think? Should I stop dreaming?!

Yep. Dreaming. We had to cancel our award flights through CX through to Europe a while ago for July. I'm thinking to be honest that such a consideration would be well beyond their level of thinking right now.

Thank you Pushka. But what do you make of Qantas changing my itinerary so that second flight departs before first flight? If, by some miracle, travel advisories are lowered and my insurance is friendly I would consider flying in June but can't fly on this revised itinerary.

The re-arranging of itineraries where the second flight departs before the first one is unfortunately nothing new with Qantas.

I think the best you will do is to get your points back, without a cancellation fee. Unfortunately that leaves you to re-book at current points levels, when flights re-open. That said, nothing lost by calling them and asking for a re-routing, but almost certainly after June. QR has cancelled their ADL flights, but are still operating flights out of other ports.

Call, expect a long wait, unless you have status (and maybe even then).

I most certainly can but of course Govt travel advisories and subsequent insurance implications would have a bearing if I chose to do so. If the flight was cancelled I wouldnt have that option but nor would it be my choice. Which is why I’m still hopeful of Qantas offering a favourable option.

Goolwa, forget anything you used to know. It is simply carnage what is happening to travel. I thin the best advice is what @RooFlyer posted - call them and see what you can get.
