Hi everyone! I've been interested in points hacking for years but never could get into it. I recently got new motivation and signed up the 100,000 amex vel plat card and have been researching how to do all of this for the past few days. With fulltime work I don't get to travel more than once or twice a year so I don't even know if it'll be worth it. The goal is to amass enough points that they can never be touched, but I guess there's a ways to go before I get there! After all this research I don't even know how to use these points.
Any helpful suggestions to maximise points for a beginner would be appreciated :)

Also, is there a way I can 'double-dip' with multiple copies of the same cards etc with my wife and pool points or something?

Nice to meet you all :)

Helpful suggestions?

Read, read, read AFF. That's how I started and I'm now hooked :D.

BTW- welcome to AFF!

Thank you! I've been reading a lot - there doesn't seem to be any mind-blowing hacks like the old days, just the daily grind :) But I'll keep at it, hopefully I'll have more than 100,000 by the end of the year :)

Your wife could get a supplementary card, but with the huge sign on bonus, better she apply for her own in this case.

Welcome aboard!

Nothing wrong with the daily grind. It's how I earned ~190k QFF and ~50k VFF points in 12 months on a salary only a fraction above minimum wage.

With your new amex you should be able to get a Supplementary card for your wife.

Welcome to AFF plebeian. As mentioned above, reading and contributing will help uncover the few remaining great deals as they occur.

Finally, treat your points like any other investment, they can be devalued and even lost without appropriate care. Accrue them for a specific travel goal and enjoy the journey, in every sense of the word it makes the whole process a lot easier.

Otherwise the whole exercise will be pointless. (Pun always intended.)

Welcome plebeian.

If you are planning on building up your points and not using them for some time make sure that your account has a reasonable amount of activity. If it lies dormant for too long, the points may be lost.

Thanks :) I'm considering sending her an amex referral but it's an extra $350 a year. Trying to figure out how to offset the $700 a year...

The complimentary domestic flights should off set that for both of you. So 220K points and 2 flights. You can't get better than that. Otherwise cancel your wife's card before the annual fee is applied.

True, true.
Now I've got to wrap my head around what points are actually worth and how/what the best way to spend them is. From what I understand, it's not possible these days to get more points from travelling than you spend to do it? making a net-loss of points in the end?

Welcome to AFF plebeian!

Airlines should make earning free miles much easier. Too hard as it is right now and not enough dopes like me paying to earn miles.

I wish to learn your ways. my points-fu is weak and I am in need of training.:)
