My wife and I have always flown economy on holidays but last year, we decided to splash out and treat ourselves with a business class trip to London. I shopped around on the Internet and got the best deal from Malaysian. Then I went to Flight Centre and they did even better!
MAS was excellent and it will be hard to ever fly long-haul in economy again. The icing on the cake was an upgrade from business to first class from KL to London.

I would think after such a generous upgrade it might even be hard to fly business again, let alone economy :p

I really think first class was OTT. It was a special experience but business class was wonderful and quite enough for us.

I have been Malaysian business class 2 times and now and both times have been very impressed with both the product, and service.

They have promos from time to time but I have always been skeptical about the condition of their aircrafts. For some unknown reason I don't think they are as safe as CX, SQ or QF (yes QF but don't laugh too loud!).

Why would we laugh? Confused... QF is pretty much the safest going round, certainly more proactive than SQ as recent events have illustrated.

I've flown on their long-haul business class a number of times now and I've always been impressed. I will always fly in business with them now, if I can help it.

So glad to hear this as I purchased a trip back to Oz on MH in J for August - looking forward to seeing what it is like :)

Malaysian business is a joy, I've flown their business class several times and I can't think of a single criticism.

A friend of mine had never flown business before, she flew out from London to Sydney with them a few years ago and was delighted that she was upgraded on one leg (she thought to first but it turned out was actually to business). They seem to be pretty generous in upgrading pax.

I've flown their economy a couple of times as well and have enjoyed the experience (as far as it's possible to enjoy long-haul economy).

I've flown MH in J on overseas flights and loved it. I booked a few Y class flights within Malaysia for nothing. Overweight luggage no problem on either class. I was given an exit row every time in Y. Even on a short flight from PEN to KUL you get a good meal with friendly attentive staff. I couldn't see QF doing that.

I enrolled in Enrich as I can see myself flying with them again.

They don't serve meals on short domestic flights in Y but they do in C, and they're actually quite reasonable too.

I know that one of the main criticisms of their FFP (Enrich) is that they are not part of any global alliance. However, I've really only started to appreciate their FFP in the last few years since I've been travelling more with them (including in premium classes). They offer generous points/miles earning. You even get miles for deeply discounted Y fares (unlike SQ) and the redemption cost is probably the cheapest I've ever encountered. I often redeem companion business class tickets from SYD to Europe (since I always pay for my ticket) and it only costs me a ridiculous 116000 miles (mind you, taxes are separate). Add that to the easy earning of points if you're a Westpac Altitude card holder and redeeming for tickets is very easy. I've also found that it's so much easier to redeem tickets with MH than it is with QF.

We usually fly Int. in J, been planning a trip to the US, see great deal here from Malaysia Airlines around $4K (+ taxes) BNE or SYD to LAX Return (companion fare), amazing, Q want over $9K, not worth going on Q to get points with $5K difference, J looks dam good too, like to see KL for few days too.

The current sale is not even a companion fare! Fares to LAX from Australia will end up being about $4700-4800 inclusives of all taxes. You'll be able to book online from SYD, MEl and PER because there are twice daily flights, which provides a slightly better connection to the flight from KUL to LAX. You may have to call their reservation centre for tickets from BNE and ADL. The sale ends May 16, so decide quickly! Their business class is rather good and, for this price, it is amazing value!

I see now not companion fare, wow, to early for us to book yet, pity, I'll keep a watch out for later specials.

Any idea of how many of their FF points needed for a J from OZ to LAX ret.?

I don't think they'll have another special like that for a while. I fly MH a lot and I'm always looking out for their business class specials. The cheapest I've seen them offer from Australia to Europe was about $6000 or maybe even $5900. I've never seen them be as low as $4800 over the last 2-3 years that I've been keeping watch.

Anyway, I think you need 145000 miles to get from Australia to LAX return. SYD-LHR is 145000, so I'm assuming it's the same (it's the maximum distance). If you redeem a ticket online, it will be 15% less. If you get a companion ticket (to accompany the one you've bought), it will only cost 116000 but there will be no further 15% discount because you can't redeem companion tickets online unfortunately. Bloody cheap for a redemption ticket, if you ask me. Mind you, taxes are not included.

I agree the service on MH ain't half bad. The reason I'd never fly with them by choice though is the trouble they got into flying into LHR without enough fuel a few years ago, then 'requiring' a landing slot. It was a cunning plan, but they got busted big time for that one. Not sure how widely known this one is. It happened when fuel prices were sky high - like they are again now:shock:

Oh, yes, I remember that.
