Hi,

Just wanted to check with you folks for some real world experience - I currently have the Amex plat and reserve cards. I was going to refer Mrs Calgarychris to get the Platinum edge card (which is what the reserve card refers). She should be eligible to get any sign up bonuses and fee waiver as she isn't the primary on any Amex cards (and never has been). If she then refers the Platinum Edge card to me, would I be eligible for sign up bonuses and fee waiver as well? The T&Cs would appear to preclude me as I am a current Amex card holder, but I've never had the Edge card before so I wanted to check.

Also, when I applied for the Reserve card after getting Plat I got a massive signup bonus which would suggest that either my understanding is incorrect or their systems don't always check. The agent I spoke to confirmed at the time that I was eligible.

Anyway, thanks

There are reports of people getting the sign up bonus even if they already have an Amex, however a small population of people also failed to get it so ymmv.

Are you saying you got a sign up bonus for the reserve in addition to the bonus in the charge card? How long ago did you apply for the reserve? Always saw the reserve as an extra esp with the free flight to help offset part of the $1200 annual fee.

Correct, I applied for plat and got 100k and they told me they also had a signup bonus for the reserve. One agent I spoke to (the first one) said it gave another 100k, a second one said 50k and the third one was horrified at the idea. Anyway, the spend was $1,500 so I figured and try it and poof, I got another 100k :). I posted it in the Amex forum at the time (or possibly this one)

Works for me :)

This is also my experience

Were you successful?

Oh no very unsuccessful my application was AMEX business card platinum looking for 150k points even though it was a company card they flatly denied me points pointing out I was already a AMEX member cc card ( centurion)

So after spending some money on the card (5000 aud) to activate the 150k I waited and waited over two months.

I rang and found out about my predicament.

So I promptly cancelled the card ( it was an effort to get it)

And received a pro rata refund!!

Bummer, sorry to hear. You'd think for the sake of keeping a Centurion customer happy...

Anyway, Mrs Calgarychris should get the points, and I the referral. Whether it comes back the other way we'll see...

Cheers

I was wondering whether to pack in all together with Amex because they become over time more and more inflexible and the relationship manager cares more about his relationship with the company than mine.

So one more thing is required to trip me over the line and I will call it quits and find a new Card to service my needs.

My sympathies and somewhat surprising as the annual fee on the Centurion is pretty high isn't it?

The card fee annually is about 4300 AUD one of my friends in the states paid 5000 USD for the US Centurion.

I am having grave doubts as to the need to continue this.

0.5 pts per dollar spent at the ATO plus the fee( surcharge)2-3%!not great ?!

Some will use the annual fee as a business write off, tax deduction especially if it is used as a business card.

The related benefits have been gradually eroded in my opinion.

Though the free QC membership and priority pass will be most missed. Though I do not need QF club anymore
Insurance for travel and purchases. Hilton Honours platinum are other things on the list to miss.

Card not accepted at Costco and many other places were ℅ payments ( surcharge) 3% are required!

Congrats on your points By the

Just applied for the platinum charge card through a referral link and got my 120k points even though I already have a platinum edge. Points appeared at the same time that th qualifying spend transaction did.

It seems like the system that handles the signup bonus is a little "flexible". I got my 120k points without even meeting the qualifying spend (had only got to about $500 when the bonus appeared).

The qualifying spend is actually $500, it's just incorrectly shown as $1k.
