I stayed at the Intercontinental Hotel Sydney on Monday night. I was looking forward to returning as I stayed here once back in 2002 before boarding the QE2 for a cruise - so the experience was a fond memory for me.

Sadly this hotel has deteriorated significantly in the last 10 years.

The room I had was dated, worn out and had no sound proofing... I could hear EVERYTHING my neighbors were doing, both in their rooms and bathrooms, which was unfortunate.

The plumbing was very noisy and the air conditioner hummed and ticked all night, even in the lowest setting.

I got about 3 hours sleep before the alarm clock radio started buzzing at 6am and then continued to go off even after I turned snooze off.

The only respite was to unplug it and take the batteries out...

That was disappointing but what was worse was the lack of privacy!! In that I mean a staff member entered my room without knocking! I was indisposed in the bathroom at the time (with the door ajar). I heard the room door open, and the person entered the room and moved around my room. I heard the clink of bottles from the mini bar so I assume they were there to restock -- I repeatedly called out (very loudly) for them to please leave which took several minutes for them to leave without acknowledging my requests or apologizing.

I complained to the staff at the hotel reception - mainly to just ask them to ensure it doesn't happen to anyone else - and the staff assured me this was not usual and that the Manager would contact me. No manager contacted me, surprise surprise.

The head of catering / room service called me about 30 minutes later, to interrogate me on the way the events played out and then advised that the issue "wouldn't happen again during my stay" and asked if i wanted to order anything from room service ... which I also felt was a ridiculous comment given it should never have occurred in the first place.

The initial incident was disappointing - but it could have just been an innocent mistake on the staff members behalf. However, I don't expect I should have needed to bolt my door closed at a hotel such as Intercontinental to enjoy privacy in my room so I thought it wise to notify the reception staff.

However the pathetic manner in which I was dealt with afterwards has made me very unhappy. I expected far, far better service from Intercontinental.

To make matters worse, when I checked out later that day, I was checked out by the duty manager who made no mention of my situation, or apology, and to add salt to the wound then proceeded to charge me for mini-bar usage - quite ironic given it was the minibar restock that caused this issue in the first place.

I travel to Sydney work many times a year and usually stay at the Swissotel - having had an opportunity to try Intercontinental Sydney, I am of the belief that I should have stuck with Swissotel.

I have been a regular visitor to the IC and in fact will be there again in a week or so, and have never had any of the issues you experienced, thats of course not saying they did not happen. I usually get a deluxe room which is up high and have never heard a peep from a neighbour, it sounds like you got a horrid room, as for the entry by staff, I always recommend the privacy latch that prevents such things.

Its probably worth posting on Flyertalk as the IC Sydney has a rep on that forum, due to a change in policy on treatment of Priority Privilege stays at this hotel, my next stay will be my last.

That's it! In 2002 we stayed in the Executive Levels - right up the top - so it must be better up there!

Agree that the hotel is getting dated now and as markis10 has said the recent "enhancements" by Management in their interpretation of the rules in relation to the Priority Privilege program will mean I'll stay at the Hilton for all future stays.

The Sydney Hilton is undergoing some renovations during April but I am assuming they are minor only given I can't find much information on it

The IC is living off the excellent views from the lounge on the top floor, and that all celebrities seem to stay with them

I have always personally had excellent stays @ IC Sydney. I make a point to always book a club room as like many have mentioned before the Club Lounge is the main selling point of this hotel. While I have enjoyed my room upgrades in the past, I still think staying @ IC Sydney in a club room using BOGO is still excellent value. I think it comes to approximately $250 / night using BOGO. Thats a bargain where you take into account free breakfast, twilight drinks and their tasting plate.

Thank you for your review and I do hope you have received a letter of apology.

Again we are very sorry that you may not have heard our mini bar colleague knock upon entering your room whilst you were in the bathroom. Our mini bar colleague will be knocking much louder in the future. It is standard procedure to always knock before entering a guest room. Our Restaurant / Room Service Manager made contact with you direct to find our first hand from yourself what had happened. I understand he extended his apologies and asked if there was anything further he could do for you. I am sorry if his good intentions have been misread.

Thank you again for your review and we do understand your preference for Swissotel and if you do decide to revisit, please do contact us direct.

Yours sincerely

I today had a letter from the hotel manager who explained the situation which I was appreciative of.

Apparently the hotel monitors this website too which is good to see.

I paid slightly less than that price for an ordinary room. Should I return, I will take that into account. The 2002 experience I had was absolutely superb so I will just put this one down to a bad run and move on :)

Amazed you had such an experience - I've had multiple problem-free stays at IC Syd.

Thank you,

Yes it arrived today along with a refund on the minibar cost of $14 for the water - thank you.

As I said; the stay I had in 2002 was superb; so perhaps this was just a one off bad experience - appreciate you taking the time to reply to the complaint.

Kind regards,

ChrisCunard.

Thanks for posting that you got a response as well, too often we dont hear the follow up!
