Hi, the intercontinental in NYC near Times Square looks good but a couple of reviews claim the neighbourhood is "sketchy" and "gritty"; any experiences here and is the neighbourhood a problem (I doubt it personally).

We did 4 rooms at Marriott Marquis and we felt it was a brilliant location for Times Square and for walking as tourists. We walked to the shows at night. You can walk safely in that area.
The glass lifts were the only thing one of my group did not like at the Marriott.

Not many parts of NY that aren't "gritty" - wouldn't be concerned

Anyone who has visited Manhattan in the last five years (or more) would realise how damn safe the island is. I personally would have no hesitation walking/staying anywhere upto 100th street or lower at any time of the day or night. I have read reviews of the IC TS and I was planning to stay there myself last year (but stayed at the W US instead) and its only two-three blocks from the heart of TS so don't really know why people call it sketchy/gritty etc when its soooo close to the heart of tourist mecca. My friends who live in NYC think its soooo safe anyway ... and reading various reports, confirms that belief.

I haven't stayed there before but I have stayed in Midtown at Doubletree Suites Times Square ( across from Marriott Marquis)
Times Square is a fantastic location. It is clean, safe and to me a great NY location. There is a friendly NYPD presence ( lots of them having their photo taken with tourists).
I have no hesitation in staying in that location again ( I will be there in June).

It was a bit of a wallet clean out but we did get great room prices. My sons each had a room with a view too.
I think the average of all the rooms worked out at about $330 USD per room per night including taxes but I had to push for a good deal.
The Marriott Marquis can charge double our price when it is busy or close to full.

I stayed at the Intercontinental Times Square in Feb 2011 for 14 nights and it was lovely. The hotel itself was very good, rooms on the small side but I would say this is indicative of NYC hotels in general. It was well appointed and very comfortable. The area is just fine, nothing to worry about. I wandered around the neighbourhood by myself at 11pm (I am a small female) and felt perfectly safe. There are so many people and plenty of NYPD cops around at all hours of the night. On the other hand, there's no way I would do the same thing in George St Sydney, so that's kind of saying a lot.

No so. Close to theatre district and the old hells kitchen, which is now renamed Clinton.

Indeed the restaurant 'Hells Kitchen' in Clinton was one of the best feeds I've had. Referred by IC NYTS.
