Hi y'all

Thanks to the AFF Forum I've learnt alot recently! Not least the best way to use my hard earned QFF points. At the beginning of the year I was interested in a trip to North America with a colleague. I'd seen the dollar rising to an equitable position and then heard about the soon to be infamous 'enhancements', so I thought what better time to use my points than a business or first class return flight to the west coast of the US. My only concern was that I had probably left it too late since award seats are best available 365 days out and the target dates were about 3 months away.

My research had directed me to ravage the QFF rewards redemption tool being sure to select 'flexible with flights' whilst also taking into consideration all sorts of possible routes including One World partners. I didn't have any specific dates in mind, although I was keen to avoid US public holidays yet at the same time avoid non-peak season (booked a 7 day Alaska cruise - far better weather in peak). On average, from early March to late April, I would log in and perform my daily ritual of checking availability across all different routes up to three times each day! I'd even called the Qantas Award number on several occasions to confirm I was seeing all availability as I should be! Long story short, in the space of one week, Qantas released a batch of two weeks worth of business class from SYD->SFO. I snaffled my preferred date within minutes!

The return trip wasn't looking at all encouraging since there was virtually zero availability, not even economy for weeks at a time! I was already planning to come home via HNL (*class for SCs) when a business class LAX-> SYD appeared departing 4 weeks after my arrival - perfect timing. After picking myself up off the floor and reattaching jaw, I had a return business class to the west coast of US for TWO people (384K). I will continue to troll the award booking engine for two first class seats though I don't like my chances and wouldn't be put out if they didn't come by.

The excitement didn't stop there however, as I was now posed with important questions such as seating allocation. Once again, thanks to this forum I used various feedback and a couple of prominent seating allocation websites to advise me of the best seats. On the way over its a three-class 744 and although my preferred seats were already taken, I chose the upper deck (13A/B), while on return its a two-class configuration and I chose the pointy bit at the front (3A/B) - theres noone next to you until 3J/K about 2 metres away! Unfortunately SGs like myself cannot prebook an exit row, so I will simply have to turn up at T-3hrs and request the likes of row 16 upstairs for the additional legroom, privacy and flexbilty of AVOD system built into the skybed.

In summary, I now have a handy set of two return business class flights and a good chance of getting the best seats. My advice for other relative newbies for award redemption is to:
  • Be Proactive (plan and review all possible routes via One world partners and consider flexible dates. If something pops up, you can snap it up without delay)
  • Be Patient (businses/first seats are far from common)
  • Be Persistent (check at least daily)
Hmmm... might look to register the 'The three Ps for Award Bookings' :p .

I'm still filling the gaps for the 4 weeks in North America so will address these details and seek your advice in a separate post. Thanks to the AFF Forum and for all your advice so far!

That's very encouraging indeed, Gold Member especially as it concerns routes with infamously thin award availability. Unfortunately I've still got a lot to learn on the persistent and patient bits.

Enjoy your trip! :D

Minor point of clarification - I think awards are available to QFF members 355 days out and not 365 days out?

In case anyone is still keen on award availability to/from the US, I've just noticed one that popped up throughout my daily checks for June 24th:

20:45 Los Angeles 08:15
(Thu) MelbourneQF26 18h 30m
1 stop Seat Seat

2 x Business Class seats.

Good luck, I dare say this will be snapped up quickly.

It seems every time I read about this stuff I start getting a headache.

My wife and I are planning a RTW trip in J next year using points (!!!) and I am just hoping that I will be able to pull it off cos I just don't think I have the patience that you described in your first post!

Well done tho!

Yes it should very interesting planning a Oneworld RTW award for May 2009. I know my final destination but not sure of the intermediate stopovers yet and whether it will be in economy or business class.

I promise I will try not to veer off the track too much apart from some SCruns in the USA.

Sorry for digging up an old thread.

What time do the award seats become available online, i.e. I am wanting to book some award seats on the 26th of December, which is now showing as an available selection in the booking engine.

However I checked just after midnight this morning, and have been checking every few minutes since 6am and nothing for any sector I am interested in, and for other flights that I just randomly checked... nothing, nada, zip...

Could this just be that QF is not releasing any award seats for this day (obviously it is a peak travel period, hence my continual checking)

During Summer - 11 am* AEDST

If you want to spend 2½K per PAX, you can often call before then.

Note that Boxing day is a tough one for award bookings.

* (midnight UTC [Amadeus time] - in winter it's 9am AEST)

I had the same problem recently when trying to book a trip to the UK next December. Knowing seats would sell like hot cakes I checked the second the date became available on the award site .... and like yourself came up with exactly zip. Frustrated I rang Qantas to ask if they had actually released any classic awards for SYD-LHR, and she replied "Not yet - but keep trying".

I kept banging away the next day without luck and had almost given it away as a bad QF joke, when suddenly 3 seats became available. It was on 2 flight numbers and I think picks up the Melbourne flight that routes via Hong Kong, but it leaves Sydney on the evening of the last day of term which is perfect. So even though the booking engine will let you select your desired date, this does not mean that Qantas have loaded up the award seats for that date. It just means that the game is on and you had better be patient and persistent!

Sometimes it's worth trying unusual routes to London (via Tokyo, Johannesburg, etc). It's still a 64000 point award (as long as you're happy with economy). I have booked SYD-DUB in August but via LAX/ORD. It's a bit further than via LHR but it's also 10,000 points less and the fees/taxes are lower. Unfortunately its AA and you have to buy lunch but that's not a big problem.
