International baggage allowance - connecting flights with only one segment upgraded?

Hi all,

Perhaps a silly question, but as I haven't done it before and couldn't find the relevant information on the QF website or through the search feature on here, I was just trying to clarify which baggage allowance would apply in the following circumstances:

  • Travelling FRA-SIN-BNE, booked in Y (currently NB and not QP, but as a side note, will be PS on landing in BNE :D)
  • Booked as a multi-city on the one PNR, and requesting that bags be through-checked to BNE when arriving in FRA (not leaving the airport in SIN)
  • Requested a points upgrade (Y->J) for both the QF6 FRA-SIN, and QF52 SIN-BNE flights

Considering the flight loads, the FRA-SIN upgrade is looking very likely to be accepted, while the SIN-BNE upgrade has a 99% chance of being declined.

If only the FRA-SIN flight was upgraded to J, does the J baggage allowance apply to the connection also, if the bag is through-checked (as the SIN-BNE flight is (most likely) in Y)?

Conversely, if only the SIN-BNE flight is (miraculously) upgraded, would the J baggage allowance still apply from FRA, or would the extra baggage allowance essentially be unusable in this case?

Many thanks! :)

Since that journey is on the one carrier then MSC rules do not apply.

I believe Qantas give the most generous allowance for travel on connecting international QF flights.

Re: International baggage allowance - connecting flights with only one segment upgrad

Yay! :D

I'm hoping that the FRA-SIN upgrade at least comes through, and if so, that I'm notified at T-24 as I was for the SIN-LHR flight on the way over here! I've done a decent amount of shopping in FRA (70% off sales!), so now just have to wait to see if I need to visit the post office, or if we can just keep everything in our suitcases!

Also, as I'm travelling with one family member on the same PNR (and therefore the upgrades are requested for both of us), if it does come through (granting 32kg/pax), can that allowance be combined by checking in, say 2x23kg bags, and 1x18kg bag (totalling 64kg between two pax)? This would otherwise make 1 pax overweight (41kgs), and the other underweight (23kgs)... I'm assuming not as each bag would need to be associated with only one passenger in the system, but no harm in asking! Otherwise, I suppose we could be creative with packing and ensure that the two lightest bags don't total more than 32kgs, but it would be a bit of a squeeze! :)

Thanks again serfty - you're always a great help! :)

Re: International baggage allowance - connecting flights with only one segment upgrad

Update: still waiting on news of the upgrade, though it seems none have been processed on this flight yet (flying out tonight)...

Hurry up with a yes or no QF!! I want to be packed appropriately before having to check-out of the hotel (already managed a free 4pm late check-out), and if upgraded want to secure the only set of 2 J seats together that still remain, as almost the entire deck is unavailable due to the 'platinum shadow' appearing *everywhere* (know it's the shadow because 2A (with 2B blocked) moved to 12A (with 12B blocked), and then 2A&B became available - though 2A has now been snagged by a non-platinum, as 2B remains available)!

All my other upgrades have cleared between T-24 and T-19, and my one and only decline (which I predicted because the flight was J0), was at about T-12... T9.5 now and no news... :@ haha
