We have flights booked from Sydney to Scotland with BA and from Scotland to Iceland, then Oslo with SAS and return from Copenhagen to Sydney in July. Flights have not yet been cancelled by we are anticipating they will be. Travel agent informs me that both airlines are only providing flight credits, not refunds. As we are flying business class these flights were a significant investment and due to my husband's health this was to be our last international trip, so we would prefer refunds. Does anyone have any experience with gaining refunds from these airlines or knowledge of their policies?

@Flashback might be able to help with the BA - I know he mentioned it on another thread but not sure where

I have a flight from Kef to Cph on Scandinavian in mid June. The flights on this route are cancelled til mid May and i'm sure it is only a matter of time before our flights get cancelled as well. From reading the SAS website, if they cancel the flight you can apply for a refund, and I'm waiting for this to happen. If I cancel now, i would only get a travel credit. Hope this helps.

Colleagues BA flight was cancelled this week and BA agent proactively offered a full refund when he rang up.

We have flights with BA from Bangkok Heathrow June/July in J, hoping for a cancel , how long should we wait ?

ATM BA is cancelling flights up to end of May so probably another couple of weeks before they commence June cancellations

BA does take of their customers and hence to increase their experience with airlines they really had created a policy. If you canceling the flight with BA then you can save money by going for a return /refund. On cancellation of flight within 24hours at BA, you either refunded or returned with the keeping in mind policy. You need to follow just the British Airway Return Policy procedure to return/refund.

Thanks Denise Fyfe
Update just received a EMail from BA asking me if I want to cancel our flights in J for june/July and receive a voucher/ credit valid till April 2022, your thoughts please.

My thoughts: there are a couple of scenarios to consider here
1. If a Virgin airlines style situation occurs with BA flight credits will be virtually useless.
2. My understanding in that we won’t be travelling internationally before next year and probably only then if a vaccine is available, and when flight resumes social distancing will still be required which will make for more more expensive tickets. Which means even if you have a flight credit it will cost you more for a ticket.
3. Your personal circumstances may have changed.

For myself I will be holding out for a refund.

The first thing you need to know is the fare conditions for the original booking with BA. I had a direct booking with BA, and @serfty advised me to use the Finnair site to re-send the eTicket, as it pulls the full details of the fare basis out of Amadeus system they share with BA. It is possible then to look up the fare basis on Expert Flyer (many of us have a subscription if you don't). This was a huge help to me and although it took 5 weeks, because I was sure of the fare basis I was able to insist on a refund and eventually received it.
The Finnair link is:Order your e-ticket receipt

Thanks for this info OATEK., Iwouldnt have found it otherwise. I have discovered we are booked Business class I (lowest) on BA , so I’m guessing that is going to be a non refundable fare. We booked thru an agent, which I’m regretting, as this was just part of a quite extensive trip, and she seems very reluctant to discuss refunds vs credit, I’m guessing because of the commissio. I will continue to push for refunds but am not optimistic. If youhave any further advice I would be grateful.

Having a TA in the middle doesn't help. But it is always good to know the fare conditions before you start negotiating. They will be attached to the ticket in the agents system, and if you don't have a copy you should insist the TA provide a copy. The fare basis code would look something like: INNC0US2. Our booking class was I, and yet we received a full refund -$250 change fee each.

That’s good to know. Thanks for the information, it is appreciated.
