I realise Qantas isn't providing the bus transfers between domestic and international, but what about bags? Can bags be transferred? Is the check in desk at international (for domestic connections) open?

Not according to a recent report by @Rellim001 :

Inbound you need to self transfer, however for outbound ie. domestic -> international, bags are now being through-checked and transferred.

Has anyone had experience flying into Sydney? What's the process like? Immigration just as slow as before (even with far fewer passengers)?

I've just connected CFS-SYD-AKL today.

My checked bag was transferred automatically in Sydney without me needing to collect it. I'm also told the transfer bus is now running in the morning between 9am-12pm, but as I arrived in Sydney in the afternoon it wasn't available then.

It was fast for me but I was fortunate to be first to arrive. They were checking NSW travel applications between gate and immigration. Only a couple of immigration officers manning desks, but then there were only 2 flights when I arrived at SYD. Customs was fast, presumably because nearly everyone was Aussie or Kiwi.

Do you know if the transfer bus is going in both directions, or just dom->int?

Hoping they also extend the hours. My next trip (in just over a month) has a int->dom connection arriving well before 9am.

I don’t know, sorry.

Passing through a week ago from NLK, immigration was manual processing (no Smart Gates). Presumably they gave up after too many people not removing mask for their closeups (as someone else reported when the TT bubble opened). But with few flights, the processing is pretty quick.

Oh, the Smart Gates were out of action outbound also and that took time with all the Monday morning departures. There’s no Priority lanes still, so allow 15 mins if leaving during a peak time.

Also, QF checkin in SYD didn‘t have the 1st checkin area operating. One Biz Class checkin Q for QP up was a bit slow. Probably easier to self check....
