I've just put in a request for an upgrade on an International booking. The QF website says you'll be notified 5 hours before departure if its successful. I'd like to have the extra 10kgs allowance for checked in baggage if I am successful (or else i may have to use unaccompanied baggage).

So, how Long before departure have others been notified of a successful upgrade request?

Points were deducted from my account the morning of a 5PM flight.

Mines 3pm this Sunday, so I better come up with a contingency packing plan!

So can unaccompanied baggage be arranged on the day of the flight? or do you have to phone in advance or something?

Three ways to do this:

  • Look your booking up on www.checkmytrip.com ; do this regularly from T-25. You will see if you are upgraded by a change in class.
  • Look for those FF points (or SC's) being deducted.
  • Look your booking up on Qantas.com.

Best to phone in advance but I think if you are using Qantas Freight unaccompanied baggage service you can do it on the day of departure. The bag(s) may be put on the same flight you are on if space permits otherwise on the next available flight.

If I remember correctly a QF Silver gets the same checked baggage allowance of 30kgs as a business class passenger.

serfty is pretty much on the money here.

There is no set time.

The process last time I did it is something like:

X hours before travel, www.checkmytrip.com will show you waitlisted in J.
X- ~3 hours before travel, the waitlist will clear and you will be booked into J and be assigned a seat.

Your waitlist could technically clear any time until the doors close on the plane...

In my experience, the final allocation happens around 9pm-12am the night before.

But that's only a guess based on my experiences.

The QF website says Silver gets an Additional 10kgs, so I'm assuming thats a total of 40kgs?

Ahh ok, so i really do have to do some serious baggage planning for both scenarios on the morning of the flight then..good thing I know how to plan ??

For my flight last Monday (late afternoon) the upgrade came through on the Sunday evening, so just a little under 24 hours notice. I just logged in my FF account in the preceeding days and was happy to see the points balance go down the night before the flight.

Good luck with the upgrade request.

Only if your upgrade clears. In economy it is 20kgs plus 10kg equals 30kg.

(I'm assuming you aren't flying to US which uses piece system - there the silver benefit is an extra piece, ie 3 pieces total regardless of whether your upgrade clears.)

I'm going Sydney to Hong Kong..one way..doing the "working overseas" thing for a couple of years. Hence would like to be able to take a few things with me, like books and my camera gear, which tend to weigh a bit. But I'll be returning home in March next year for a visit so I could make it wait.

Depending on just how much extra you need, it can sometimes be advantageous to book a circle pacific or round the world in order to get the benefit of higher checked baggage allowance under the piece system. Sadly no longer as good as it used to be with several airlines reducing the maximum weight per piece under the piece allowance.

Just an Update:

I GOT IT!

Yay my first Intl' Upgrade, and it only cost me 40K points! (actually thats quite a bit)

Found out tonight at about 8:15pm, my flight leaves tomorrow at 3pm, leaving me plenty of time to contemplate what to do with my extra 10kgs (I'm relocating overseas so it'll come in handy)

Also, seating in seat 2A on the A330-300 - as far as I'm concerned thats an awesome seat!

Apologies for sounding like an excited kid - cause I are one!
