G'day and Howya AFF members.

Frequent browser, new member OzEire here - not just with a quick intro post but also my all time number one frequent flyer tip.... if you are a blade shaver like me use shave gel rather than an aerosol can of foam.

Hate that frustrating point at the security checkpoint where you have to remove your laptop, aerosol cans and metal items ? I turbo through by:

1. No laptop... a good smartphones these days is much easier - pop it in the side pocket on your carry on bag
2. No belt - choose the right attire and it is obsolete
3. No loose change in the wallet, keep it in your pocket
4. Ditch the shave foam can and take a tube of shave gel instead, King of Shaves or Bulldog are good and do a great shave to boot !
5. Oh, an no one wears shoes with metal in them any more do they ?

Walk up to security and while everyone else is loosening their belt, taking out the laptop and cans of shave foam and emptying pockets you just put your carry on bag through the x-ray and waltz through the metal detector. You will look so confident that you are sure to be picked for the random explosives check, unless you can time your run behind the emo kid wearing a black shirt and cammo pants who gets 'special attention' after his peircings set off the detector six times.

Safe travels.

Welcome OzEire!

Hmmmm ... I'll quote your post the next time I'm asked why I've turned up to give a presentation at the client's Board meeting dressed like a backpacker and only my phone to run my power point presentation on.

Looking forward to hearing more! :D

Cheers

Welcome to AFF!
I try to pass the security checks as fast as I can. The only thing I take out is my ultrabook because I can't really do much work on my iPhone. After some searching I managed to find a nice looking belt with no real metal, I never take shaving kit with me (every decent hotel provides one) and coins don't beep anyway so no worries about that.
Oh, and shoes with metal?! We're not in the 70's...

Welcome OZEire

my slant...

I have to wear belt or duds would fall down.
I never travel anywhere without my iPad
I would not take shave cream in hand luggage
I always wear smart slip on shoes, easy to remove and put on.
I do't jump queues
I get to airport early and use the Q lounges

Welcome aboard!

Sounds like you know what you are talking about.

I'm almost persuaded that an iPad and keyboard will replace a laptop. Not quite there yet, but we're making solid progress. The ergonomics are the problem if you do any serious typing.

I have a plastic belt somewhere. Trouble is that it's a web weave intended for carrying equipment and it's too wide to fit through the belt loops of normal trousers. I haven't been able to find a belt without any metal that is both functional and looks good.

I try not to carry loose change anyway. It goes into a pocket in my Coccoon before I get to security, all those leftover forren quarters and pesos.

Thoroughly agree with the shave gel. I actually use shave oil such as King of Shaves or Somersets. Only a tiny container and it lasts a month. Been years since I lathered up. Not always easy to find on the road when you run out, but.

However, sure as anything, once you get a routine going to waltz through security, they'll change the rules. The TSA isn't interested in what you have in your pockets so much. They want to slow people down so they can get a good look at them, and how they act with a little bit of stress.

I never travel anywhere without my iPad
Likewise - it's almost a substitute for a computer, and it's great for reading books without lugging along the paper versions.

I have yet to see any consistency in whether iPads stay in or out. Some places, they insist. Some places, they don't care. Seems to me that the insisting places are gradually predominating.

I have an even better tip. Use shave oil rather than gel. With shave oil you need only a small squirt or 3-4 drops for a shave. Means you need only carry 20 ml of shave oil for a year's worth of travel. And it can be used as an after shave balm as well. I would not use it long term (more than a week) as it is a little rougher on the skin. But is perfect for road warrior travel

Welcome to AFF OzEire!

- Feel naked without a belt on my pair of trousers (need to wear loose fitting trousers as I tend to put on weight quickly overseas)
- I don't like shaving foam. I use shaving cream and a brush but I do not need to go hand luggage only
- I wear leather mocassin style shoes
- I have a smartphone and that is it (no iPdas, iPods etc) as I do not want too much responsibility when I am away

You could try being a girl!

- no shave cream / gel / oil
- no belts required (hips are where it's at)
- no worry about change in pockets, because 95% of women's gear doesn't have pockets!

I never take aerosols, don't have any heavy jewellry, and rarely travel with a laptop.

Smart phone has screwed my eyesight, laptop is a must have. I take my laptop out in advance, wallet and phone go in laptop bag at the same time. My coins live in the laptop bag.

No matter what you do, if you are of middle Eastern decent and haven't shaved a few days that random test person will get you
