Have I missed something, somewhere?

Just got an email through offering me the chance to bid now on an upgrade on an economy sale ticket for this weekend - with a 10% discount - on QF35. EF is showing a few J seats available, and whilst there surely must be takers who will get them from the classic rewards upgrades, I just didn't realise it was a thing for Sale tickets to be offered a bid now.

I've gone through the Ts & Cs on the website a few times, and it reads to me as though this shouldn't happen.

Has there been a change of policy?!

Ah, yes! I think maybe I had one too many glasses of lunchtime vino.
Cheers. I figured I had to be missing something

So it's 10% off the min bid from what the email says.

I'll be a bit comatose for the eight hours from my morning dose of cognac and corn fritters, so no point in the spend even if it were to go through.

What a strange way to sell upgrade bids, a discount on the minimum bid, making you think they're doing you a favour.

QF implies that their upgrade pricing is too high and that you should be thankful.
The reality is that very few people ever win with the minimum bid, and it's to suck you into trying the bid product.

Wrapped up in classic QF marketing nonsense.
I love it.

The email seems to suggest that only Business class offers "fresh seasonal ingredients"?
Give ‘em a break. Neil Perry handpicks the carefully curated “drywall and innards” for their esteemed Economy class pax.

In all seriousness though, this Bid Upgrade “discounting” is possibly the start of a broader downward trend in future premium cabin bookings hence the desire to monetise those empty seats.

Except, they get processed after any Classic Upgrade requests, so curious how many actually go through? I would have thought Points upgrades are better value.

Whereas VA are racking in cash with Bid Now (they’re still processing offers up until 4 hrs before departure whereas “Waitlist” points upgrades fall into the bit bucket about 24 hrs out.

When you consider a good haul on points falls in a 1.4c - 1.7c a piece range and an upgrade on MEL-SIN would come in under 60k pts on a classic upgrade, then asking for 40k points plus $400+ doesn't exactly strike me as value - and that's at the extremely low end of the spectrum.

I'll stick to my bulkhead Y seat and full tummy for a daytime flight, any day of the week!
