A small point of order in relation to
medhead's post: the existing application for iPhone is from Qantas Frequent Flyer, and not Qantas. QFF is a separate subsidiary company of Qantas Airways Limited. That app is specifically geared to the program and is suitable for its intented purpose.
In respect of a Qantas mobile application, there is a mobile optimised version of their website. However, it only provides limited content and functionality (QFF login, view booking, check-in, flight status and timetable, lounges, contacts). Everything else has to be accessed through the full version of their website.
Now the real question that needs to be asked: what value could a full mobile application for Qantas on the iPad, let alone any mobile device, give to the consumer that isn't already provided on their mobile site?
For the answer to this question, we need to look, in part, towards the BA and AA offerings. Examples of this include:
- Offline storage and access to boarding pass
- Offline timetabling
- Dynamic, detailed flight information and alerts
- New bookings, or booking modification
An example of what QF might do with a future mobile application was demonstrated at the Microsoft MIX 2011 conference, which was
previously discussed in this thread. The
video walkthrough of this demonstration app is also available.
