Is Amex getting tougher on double dippers?

I referred a friend to the Amex Velocity Platinum during the July/August referral bonanza and while I pocketed 60,000 velocity points for my troubles, she seems to have missed out on the 100,000. She held a Velocity Escape Card until 5-months ago which according to the 'same points scheme theory' would have likely rendered her ineligible for the bonus.

My initial question is if she was ineligible from the get go, should that have scuppered my referral bonii?

Also, she only edged passed $1500 last week - how long does it usually take for points to trickle in? And if they're not coming (as I speculate), could she pull the pin and get paid back 11/12s of the $349 annual fee (she's only had it for a month)?

Thanks,

Lunarboogie.

The 10k points occurs at $1500 spend which she should be able to see under 'View Points Summary' with the little plus sign next to it. The next 90k points would appear once $2k spend has been met. This initally happened to me as well. your friend should be fine.

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't get the signon bonus as she had already had a AMEX Velocity rewards account open in the last 12 months. Having said that I'd give it a bit longer to see if the points credit anyway.

If she wanted to cancel the card, AMEX still seem to be offering pro-rata refunds and I would imagine she'd be eligible for one of those.

Hope the points come through for her!

As she recently had a Velocity card getting another Velocity card, even if different, would still be in the same rewards program and so it would not surprise that she may miss out.

I recently reported in another thread that I picked up a $295 refund from the $349 fee 1 week ago (had held card since July, and not used free flight), so yes, pro rata refunds are definitely still being offered.

I have also found in the past that bonus points have taken up to 7 days to post (with 10,000 initial points, then the 90,000 kicking in a couple of days after the 'pending' minimum spend charge clears). So would suggest your friend waits a little while longer before worrying.

Oh sorry misread the question. Yeah she might not get it which coincide with someone else on this forum who didn't get the bonus sign on for Platinum Edge when she held a Platinum Charge card.

Thanks all. Spoke to my friend and she received the 10,000 installment after ticking over $1500 which means the balance will follow shortly.
