I've been amused at the advertising around the 20th anniversary of the Qantas Frequent Flyer program.

In my travel experience I recall that I was a frequent business traveller and QC member only since 1989. There was no FF programs when I joined. I took an overseas holiday in August 1991. On my return flight I started earning FF points.

So, by my reckoning, the scheme started in Australia sometime in August 1991 just 16 years ago.

If it helps with memories some members may also remember that August 1991 was the time there was that food poisoning problem with the onboard orange juice. I was lucky to have been on holidays at the time but read about it on my return.

Has anyone got any other recollections on the start date of the QFF program?

August 1991 was when Australian Airlines started their FF program. I joined in September 1991. Their Flight Deck lounge membership was available prior to the FF program.

Qantas had one prior to the merger with Australian Airlines (TN). I was not a member of the Qantas program prior to its merger with TN, so don't know exactly when it started, but assume that is what commenced 20 years ago.

That is exactly right and bringing back the foggy past.

It was Australian Airlines at the time and the merger must have happened while I was gone (august) which brought on the release of the FF program to Flight Deck members.

That was so long ago, although not as long as "the pilots' dispute" which changed the face of air travel and introduced American accents to our airlines for a time.
