Hi - I have flown Schiphol to Abu Dhabi a number of times with Etihad and have alway received Velocity points. On the most recent flight however (which was purchased from Etihad with an EY code but it turned out to be on KLM metal) I was not awarded any points. After speaking with Velocity they said they would not award point in this situation. Is this normal? It just sounds like a jackpot if points are awarded or not.

What does the velocity page say in terms of earning points and SC's on codeshares?

Well I am not very sophisticated when it comes to this stuff. What is says is

When travelling on eligible Etihad Airways fares and flights with an Etihad Airways (EY) flight number, you can earn Points on your ticket.

However is also says later on:

You cannot earn Points on codeshare flights other than those operated by Virgin Australia

But an Etihad flight is not operated by Virgin and I still earn points on that. I'm totally confused and usually give up at this point but thought I would ask.

You must be flying on EY metal to get credit unless its the SYD AUH flight by VA, the EY website shows clearly which flights are not operated by them, codeshares are also four digit flight numbers.

What about the AUH - KUL flight sold as EY but ops by VA?

Or some of their CDG flights which are ops under wet lease by AF?

Wet leases are not codeshares, AFAIK the VA KUL ops were for a few months only.

That would be a codeshare flight operated by VA. therefore as per the rule already stated eligible to earn.

It's a wet lease rather than a code share -- so even though it's technically VA metal with a VA crew, it's regarded as being EY operated for the purposes of points and status credits.

OP - code shares are always murky when it comes to points accrual (the same holds true for basically every airline with other airline partners out there). When booking flights I'd recommend paying close attention to any flight that says that it's operated by another airline (it will say somewhere - usually in very small print).

For VA partner airlines, the general rule is that if it is a codeshare flight operated by another airline, it won't earn anything. There are a few exceptions out there, but for the most part .. :(
