I have been flying Karratha Perth for some years now and as the regulars back then would know Ansett had than run in the bag for price savings especially the weekend special at about $175.00 return for a naughty weekend in Perth. Well, just prior to its collapse the service and meals went to an all-time low to the extent of a bag of crisp and water on the afternoon return run to Karratha!!
Well is the same happening to Qantas?? on the 17.05 run from Kta to Perth we use to get some excellent meals (2008-2009) but now it’s a cough sandwich left over from the afternoon run from Perth to Karratha and the last flight I was on to Perth was a piece of dough packed in plastic and chilly JAM, I ask you?? Is this the end of Qantas?? And is the Virgin Airline that has moved in the next one.. To topal Qantas???

Hey

I have done the PER/KTA quite a number of times in the recent past - have a look at some of my threads about the very ordinary service I have had on this run!

What I have noted is the afternoon onboard service (meals) is quite different to the quality of the breakfast runs!

The food served on the KTA/PER leg in the afternoons does not equal the food service between say MEL/SYD or SYD/BNE. I don't think it is because QF is going the way of Ansett (:!:), however, I would guess that the airline has looked at the number of meals actually consumed on this afternoon flight, the cost and put an easy 2 and 2 together - the meals are generally just not wanted by the average person leaving KTA - they want refreshments rather than full meals (and in my case, liquid refreshments to clear that Pilbra dust from my throat!)

My opinion only, but I think it has merit

Personally I think its a reflection of people wanting to pay less and less for airfares so the airlines have to find ways to reduce their costs to be able to offer cheaper and cheaper fares. People want better service but they also want cheaper fares .... something has to give.

totally agree!! domestic airline travel in aust is akin to jumping on a bus/train nowadays due to some low airfares offered... spend 10hrs on a bus/train OR 1hr on an aircraft to get to the same destination!!!! which one would you choose??? yet the expectations/demands of the travelling public have increased!!?? the travelling public need to take some responsibility for creating this type of market... simple economics.. supply and demand... profit and loss!!

Generally all seats on this run are full paying by companies getting the workers home, its cheaper to go by Sky West or Virgin at least then you are guaranteed a seat on the late afternoon flight

But I'm willing to back a dollar to a doughnut that the companies do not pay the full commercial rates for these seats.

Agreed. There is no way that they are paying retail prices for their seats.

As for the catering, I agree with NM: Joe Public wants a cheap seat, but also wants all the frills. It has to be one or the other, or other airlines WILL go the way of Ansett. The same phenomenon can be seen in the USA - $499 can buy you a JFK-LAX return, but there is no way there will even be hot BOB items, let alone full catering in Y. UA has removed ovens from the rear galleys of their domestic fleet to save weight, since there is no plan to start giving Y pax hot food again.

This is the beast that the market has created. Passengers have to deal with the consequences of their actions, or buy a ticket in a premium cabin.

As have AA.

Try and explain that to some passengers though :!:

So true, and coupled with demand, we know which way its going to go.... in reality I can cough and moan as much as I like about the service to my destinations but the truth is I have to get from A->B one way or another, and I'd rather do it cheaper than happy.....

Recently did in whY;
PER-PHE QF1812. 08:05 Departure. 2 hour 05min trip
PER-BME QF1070. 07:00 Departure. 2 hour 25min trip

PER-PHE, FULL HOT BREAKFAST (operated by National Jet, Red Tail)
PER-BME, Cereal, yoghurt, OJ

Luckily l ate some fruit/toast before my trip to BME the other week. I was under the assumption that the PER-BME was going to be a full hot breakfast, how wrong l was. Consistency would be nice. Similar departure times, flight times close too. 2 very different meals.

I think that's correct. I was looking at HBA-MEL flights on QF recently & found myself getting annoyed that I couldn't find a fare under $130.00. Then I thought, I'm choosing QF because I want:

decent baggage allowance
a hot meal at meal times
free booze
Qantas Club
Frequent Flyer Program
staff that care [or at least give a good impression of]
company that will deal with any complaint in a timely manner
premium cabins for points upgrade should I want it
to be looked after if my flight is cancelled/delayed
etc etc etc

It occurred to me that I wanted/expected all the above but wasn't prepared to pay for it. LCC prices for full service airline:confused:
I can't recall going to a nice restaurant & expecting them to deliver quality product & service for McDonald's prices.
