Is the 24-hour upgrade request cutoff really enforced?

Yes, I complained about first class last time and said it wasn't worth it. Well, I'd like to give it another shot but I may be past the cutoff.

I fly to LAX from SYD tomorrow on business, and being a platinum holder, I was wondering how lenient check-in would be if I request an upgrade to first.

The problem is, there seems to be a 24-hour request cutoff before flight.

Have any people had any success requesting an upgrade at such a late time?

Based on my recent experience with a client i'd say you've got no hope.

I had a client in the same situation, spoke to my QF rep but was told its strictly enforced and short of calling Alan Joyce on a Saturday it couldnt be waived.

Yes, it is inforced - short of getting an operational upgrade tomorrow, I think you'll have to look at putting in a First upgrade request for your return flight.

Yeah - I too feel you will have little luck... I was in the same situation (LAS-LAX-MEL) and missed out by an hour... The advice was to " request your upgrade when you book" - in the nicest possible way.

Point One - this is strictly enforced.

Point two they would have already allocated all upgrades to people who followed the rules and requested ahead of time.

Point three The only people you would trump would be lower status requests so an WP that had requested ahead of you would have nabbed the upgrades.

Why do you think you should be able to do this? It is not a published benefit of WP.

You would effectively be asking for an op-up as on-departure upgrades are not possible on international flights.

impartiality, so what ended up happening today on your flight?

2 points:

(1) I have some friends who were flying LAX to MEL on a Sunday night. They asked for a points upgrade (either at check in or in the lounge). The Qantas staff checked and because flight was very empty in business they agreed to process the upgrade. They were originally booked in Premium.

(2) If you are a platinum and you have not checked in (whether on line or otherwise) and travelling on an upgradeable domestic economy ticket, the premium desk will process an upgrade if Business (U) inventory is available in under 24 hours.

(3) I have had reservations process an international upgrade manually 5 hours before departure where the automatic (called within QF droid) system failed to process my upgrade for that flight even though it was originally lodged before the 24 hour cutoff. Note that I lodged this upgrade over the phone and suspect that the person I spoke to did not quite do it properly. I now lodge all upgrade requests via the online system in my qantas frequent flyer profile.

No luck.

At domestic check-in I tried and the lass said, "No - domestic yes, but international no".

OK - and then at first class lounge in Sydney - "No, unfortunately too late".

Right. Well at least I had a good time in the first lounge in Sydney
