Is there any point in being a part of two ff programs part of the same alliance?

Hi There,

I am seeing a lot of you are part of two frequent flyer programs that are part of the same alliance (eg CX and QF).

I wanted to ask the main reasons why.

I mainly fly internationally and would take more CX than QF flights in a year......Is there any point in swapping over? Ive never really given it much thought.

Cheers,

Super

I got comped CX :)

Members like to be with AA as well due to their better earn/burn rates

I'm based in HKG so am also interested. How did you get comped? And from what program?

If you find yourself on CX more than QF then earning miles in their program would be more useful to you in buying upgrades on their flights, that said though, if you're already flying in premium classes you'll find it easier to earn a higher status with QF. Then there's also AA to consider, but I'm not sure what the pros/cons are in regard to CX there, just that everyone loves them.

It really depends on the situation. e.g. I can credit my QF class O ticket onto QFF, which credits at 100% miles, but zero on CX. And when I'm in class V on CX, I would put the miles into AM since it would earn at 100% rather than the 50% if I put it into QFF. It's quite a bit hard to achieve status this way though.

Or, I could just my J/F flights onto QFF, just enough to get me status for lounge access, then credit everything else into, say, AA, with a much better earn/burn ratio.

Having said that, I actually put everything into QFF, since status is more my cup of tea. I can make use of the CX TPE-HKG-SIN runs a few times a year, plus I can take 3K flights that earn points/status that I can't do on any other program.

I find myself being in a very unique situation at present.

I hold all three elite statuses on three separate programs for Oneworld.

Earned: WP on QF (Oneworld Emerald)
Compd: PS on BA (Oneworld Sapphire)
Earned: SG on AA (Oneworld Ruby)

QF is earned every year, as is the norm for me. My BA status comes from their acquisition of BD and I had Silver with BD so they comp it over to BA at the same level, giving me Sapphire for a year or two. AA was a unique situation. Thanks to service recovery bonuses and the like, I took officially 1 flight (was 3 really) and got AA Gold from that (25,000 EQM's were given to me from AA).

AA burn rates are infinitely superior to QF, if you can earn the miles well. 50% bonus for Gold, and 100% for Platinum and Executive Platinum. I'm going to start spreading my flying more between AA and QF. Once my QF WP requal is done, everything is getting put into AA (providing i'm flying in the right fare class for it to be viable).

FF programs are never simple. This is why AFF is so great ;)

For us the whole world opened up when we joined a second alliance rather than what has been posted so far. One World plus Star Alliance has got us out of tight booking issues for the last 4 years and always great seats on both.

I'm a member of 3 programs on Star Alliance:

Air NZ - which I got through a CBA free signup promo, though I'm unlikely to ever credit anything to this program (particularly now that any SQ and NZ flights can go to Velocity), and won't mind when it closes down
United - I use this as my first priority for *A flights, provided that miles can be earned on the fare type
Miles&More - I signed up for this because I had a number of economy Lufthansa and Austrian flights in fare buckets that didn't earn on United, so rather than waste the miles, I thought I should credit them somewhere! :)

On Oneworld, I'm only a member of QF. :)

QF WP for day to day flight crediting = Lounge Access, etc plus CC crediting = JASAs & upgrades.
AA for buying miles, superior earn + burn and the odd transatlantic upgrade on a DONE4
Suits Mrs Paddy & I just nicely.

I am with AA and QFF.Basically AA because of its better earn and burn. And it was easier to get LTP on.QFF because some fares on QF dont earn Aadvantage miles and for some shopping etc miles.
I am in Velocity because our home port is MCY.Sometimes I just have to use them.sending all my SCs to mrsdrron to hopefully keep 1 of us at gold.
And I have a Krisflyer account-great to transfer my CC points to and I have found it very easy to get awards.I have just helped a friend get 2xJ return saver awards BNE-NYC in December.Couldn't do it through QFF or Velocity-and they just joined up,transferred the Amex points and booked.
So it is wise not to have all your eggs in 1 basket.

I have three OW programs (and soon four)
QF - Platinum LTG. Main program
AA - Base. Having just qualified LTG some points will now be going here, but cheap QF flights still to QF.
CX - Gold. Via Amex Plat Charge. No points earnt (yet). Might take a flight on my birthday though
MH - Base. Earnt points via 5 domestic flights in Malaysia

Sometimes there is a transition period when moving from one FF program to another.......so you hold both.
Sometimes you take one-off flights on airlines that are not part of your program, so you need to credit elsewhere. Eg. Royal Brunei can credit to Asia Miles but not QFF.
Sometimes to see Award seat availability on partner airlines it is necessary to become a member of that program. Eg. if you wish to see CX award availability (and you have QFF points) it is easier to see that availability if you are also a Asia Miles member. Ditto for ANA and Star Alliance availability.
Sometimes there are special offers that are too good to refuse. Eg, One year I dropped from SQ Gold to Silver........but then US Airways released an offer that if you became a US Airways Club Member you received Lounge access at any Star Alliance Lounge, even when flying economy; so I took the offer and also joined US Airways Dividend Miles program even though I was also part of Krisflyer.
Sometimes you make a mistake.......

It's almost like the lesser experienced amongst us (ie me) need a FF Program mentor!!
