Is this itinerary possible with checked luggage?

Looking to do something different for a change and looking at following itinerary on 2 separate ticket

BKK-SIN 09:40-13:05 (SQ973 A330-300)
SIN-HKG 15:05-18:50 (SQ872 777-200)
HKG-SIN 19:55-23:40 (SQ871 777-200)
SIN-SYD 00:45-10:25 (SQ231 A380-800)

I think MCT is OK in HKG but the worry would be insufficient transit to transfer luggage unless luggage was tagged through in BKK.

I think I have much better chance with following itinerary

BKK-SIN 21:00-00:25 (SQ981 A330-300)
SIN-HKG 07:35-11:20 (SQ890 A330-300)
HKG-SIN 13:30-17:15 (SQ863 777-200)
SIN-SYD 20:15-05:55 (SQ221 A380-800)

A few choices with luggage. Leave luggage in SIN or transfer in HKG if luggage not tagged through in BKK. Slight worry leaving BKK night before and loitering in SIN airport overnight.

Unfortunately flights are in economy but I think worth it as I do not have to do 40 domestic VA flights to maintain Gold for another year.

I think the MCT is ok in SIN, not sure about HKG. SQ will always interline SQ/SQ separate tickets as long as MCT is met.

Geez John you're pushing your luck, If anything can go wrong it will since it's you.

Can you afford to lose the luggage for a few days when it goes pear shaped? If not then make other plans.

Oh and keep us informed via AFF.

That's the return journey so it doesn't really matter if luggage is delayed slightly.

I also believe SQ872 SIN-HKG turns around as SQ871 HKG-SIN. Or does it? Are they able to turn around a 777-200 in 1h 5m?

Looking at Flight Aware Singapore Airlines (SQ) #871 and Singapore Airlines (SQ) #872

SIA 872 turns around as SIA871 but seems to struggle to make an on time departure ex HKG even when arriving on schedule - so it does turn around, but maybe not quite in the 1.05 allocated

Which then compromises the 1h 5m connection in SIN?

I need to be careful here. This trip is in economy. I have no status other than VA Gold which I don't think means much with SQ. I need to make sure I keep my allocated seats on the booked flights and not risk getting middle seats on new flights due to missed connections.

I wonder if you could get your bags checked BKK-SIN-SYD (rather than them doing the HKG legs with you). Probably more chance of you making the tight connections than your bags.....

I did think of that particular route for the luggage.

That decision can only be made at BKK airport the day I check-in or in SIN airport when they receive the tags and notice that it is coming straight back to them.
