Issues with booking connecting flights with Sale Fare

Just booked in Y+ for MEL-SYD(stop)-DFW and RTN via BNE-MEL in late July. Good price, nothing extra to stopover in SYD and J seating allocated as well!

We are actually going to MSP but was surprised when the phone booking agent (couldnt book online with the stop in SYD) couldn't book me a codeshare on AA DFW-MSP return either on the same PNR or separately???

Is MSP not a codeshare destination from DFW?

Specifically, the new destinations ex DFW are:

• CLE – Cleveland
• DCA - Washington DC / Reagan National
• LGA - La Guardia, New York
• MCI - Kansas City
• SAT - San Antonio
• CUN – Cancun
• GDL – Guadalajara
• MEX - Mexico City

This will take our total of codeshare destinations ex DFW to 28

Its not listed above so maybe not although I would have thiught it would be included in the 28 mentioned above.

So now I'm unsure what to do. If I book directly with AA then I'm not protected for delays am I? If the codeshare becomes available with QF can I add to the PNR without penalty?

I'd ring QF again and speak to a different consultant. Whether it's a codeshare or not is irrelevant; QF is able to book you on any AA flight and it should be able to go on the same PNR.

It seemed strange to me too and the person I spoke to did go and check with their supervisor. He claimed that no onwards fares from DFW to MSP had been loaded and so they couldn't book at as a through fare and that it couldnt be done as a separate fare as all that could be booked were the OW fares and they weren't loaded yet for July?

I have to ring back to make final payment tomorrow (CC was maxed out so needed to clear it) and will ask again then.

It may relate to the fare (special 'til 20th) and be valid for QF flight numbers only.

I have a booking on fare basis ODFWUS; looking the fare rules up using ITA there are no such restrictions with the fare itself.

Flight restrictions

  IF THE FARE COMPONENT INCLUDES TRAVEL WITHIN AUSTRALIA
      THEN THAT TRAVEL MUST NOT BE ON
      ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING
        ANY QF FLIGHT OPERATED BY JQ.

Does that QF/JQ 'provision' relate to "END-ON-END" "WITHIN THE UNITED STATES" or just "WITHIN AUSTRALIA"?

I'm able to book a flight DFW-MSP on any date in July on AA's website , so those flights are loaded in the GDS and available for sale. QF may not be able to ticket it as a through fare, but there should be no reason they can't sell you that onward domestic AA flight and put it on the same ticket.

Called back today to make payment on my booking and asked again about adding the AA domestic flights. This time told I can't have it on the same ticket as I've booked a discount Y+ ticket and the price will go up substantially (from $2600 to over $4000 ea) if I want to do this. I then asked if I could have it as a separate ticket, telling them exactly which flights I want and after holding for over 10 mins was told they have to ring me back as there are some problems booking it. It shouldn't be so hard!

If its going to be a separate ticket (and I bet they want to charge me another phone booking fee ontop of what I already paid) then I'm thinking there is no real advantage in booking with QF and I may as well just book with AA? What I'm worried about is my return flight from MSP-DFW where if there is a delay I could miss my connection from DFW to BNE.

Advice anyone?

FWIW... I get better service and ticketing doing everything through AAdvantage, even for flights on QF metal. The US domestic sectors would be better booked with AA IMHO and I'd be surprised if you couldn't find a much cheaper fare.

Long time listener, first time caller. I hope this helps!

FWIW, I have booked connections from DFW-SFO on AA (and on to MIA at a later date) all on, what I think is, the same PNR. I couldn't do it online but was able to get my TA to book it. The connecting flights are AA flight numbers and not QF, so I'm assuming this is the same as what you are trying to do to MSP?

The only difference I can see is I'll be traveling in Y and not Y+, however it is still a discount fare.

Well QF called me back and finally quoted me a price comparable to what I can get through AA.com for DFW-MSP rtn. It had to be on a separate ticket though. I declined the offer due to their inflexible stance on charging a $60 pp booking fee even though I had already paid that for the MEL-MSP return flights booked yesterday.

Will book through AA.com directly. Is there some way to link the 2 PNR's if not using an agent?

After booking ensure both are ticketed. Then call Qantas and politely request that "Information Segments" regarding your AA tag-ons be entered into the Qantas PNR.

They might agree to do this; still you may not be protected in the even of a misconnect.

Thanks Serfty, will do. I realise re the risk of misconnects but figure the linking is better than nothing. Fingers crossed. We do have travel insurance and IME QF have been pretty good in the past when things like that have happened. I figure worst case I miss my international connection, and have to come back the next day. Not the end of the world.

Rang QF to get the "information segments" added and they said NP but nothing shows on check my trip or qf.com? Shouldnt I be able to see the AA flights now under my QF PNR or something?

You can also check by looking your booking up on www.checkmytrip.com. This can often show more than qantas.com/yourbooking.

If they do not show there, you could try calling back and asking. There's different way of entering this type of information these days, the legacy method is with "The Information Segments".
