I have a J class redemption on VA MEL-LAX out Sep 13 in Sep 23 - just killing' time here on the couch so thought I would punch those dates into BF and see whats commercially on offer.

Nearly fell of couch when I see both VA and QF offering sub 5K J fares on those dates - quite some time since we have seen those prices is it not?

Should be available on the Qf website too. Part of their current sale.

That's why I fell off my seat when I'd booked 3 U seats for the rest of the family AKL/BNE and went to book myself a seat - expecting that I wouldn't be getting anything cheap.

Fare buckets were IIRC $258 Super Saver, $450 and not expecting to see any business seats, almost choked with I class availability at $608 - versus $1,500 in full J.

Happy my timing coincided with the sale offers :D

So if QFi couldn't make money on $10k fares to the US how will they make money on $5K fares?

QFi has posted substantial losses for a few years now (subject to potential dodgy accounting allegations). I perhaps should have said "QFi couldnt make money when it was selling grossly overpriced $10K fares so how will it make any money when those fares are being sold for half the price"

As someone previously on the dodgy accounting bandwagon. I think the real issue with QFi, and QFd to a lessor extent, is the separation of QFF. That is a significant profit centre, based around the existence of the airlines, that is uncoupled from the airlines. I realise separation of QFF is a valid accounting practice but without the airlines QFF would be worth a small fraction of its current value. Who wants to collect points for $25 gift cards. So while not dodgy I think the real problem is the accounting does not reflect the true value of QFi to the group.

Mutter mutter ... checked J prices to LAX for my Oct trip. Now at what I looked at on Fri night for Y+, and Y+ much better priced now.

Mr Katie doesn't care and said I can't book J anyway :(
Really do need to try to get him to come on this trip with me, then he might let me book J. :D Esp if I lure him with a Flounge stop in SYD on the way ... ;)
