Hello, I'm a Velocity platinum and looking at booking J class rewards flights from Brisbane to Barcelona (via SIN) in November on SQ metal for my wife and I. The Virgin website is showing plenty of reward availability around the dates I'm looking at for 139,000 points p.p. each way (plus taxes). ie. 556,000 points return for both of us. Unfortunately, I only have around 450,000 points so am trying to figure out the best way around this as I understand you can't do a points plus pay option for rewards flights.
I also looked at converting to KrisFlyer, but it seems on this route the best value appears to be booking directly through Velocity if possible.
One option I thought of is booking a reward J class flight SIN-BCN-SIN using points and then make a separate booking BNE-SIN-BNE which could be done in either J class or PE and paid by cash. This would also allow us to have a few days stopover in SIN along the way.
According to the points table on the website it appears the SIN-BCN distance is 6773 miles, which makes it 92,000 points each way in J class (Table 2). ie. 368,000 points return for both of us and which I do have sufficient points for.
Does anyone have any other suggestions of a better way of booking these flights to use my points balance more effectively and reduce the surplus costs?
