Why should the offerings in J class be different in 330 and 737, I spoke with the team today on the issue of head phones, on 330 you get a noise cancellation and 737 only gets you a in-ear headset. I know it is whinging but then again do you not expect the consistent level of service on the planes (yes, I agree seating will be different and Barista is 330 only)...

Because the airline considers that greater levels of comfort are expected on longer flights. Nearly eeryone will have a set of headphones on a 4hr+ flight but not everyone wants entertainment on a 50min leg. Its all about rationalising costs\aircraft space with flight expectations. The same thing happens with longhaul, some flights will be one meal service, others two. Some flights have recliner seats others full flat beds etc.. There comes at point at which A330 style J is overkill on a short flight.

it makes sense to some extent! 737's are not only doing a short haul right, SYD - CNE is longer than that, good food and IFE would always be welcome :)

Even if they did give you noise cancelling headphones in J on the 737, you'd look like a bit of a dill because there's nothing to plug them into. The alternative would be battery powered units but management of those would be more trouble for FAs/the airline than it's worth by the time you tried to manage battery charging and maintenance.
